Here at Love Home Swap, we've found members who are swapping their primary homes are worried about how best to lock away their valuable items while they are away. For a holiday home this has less of a problem because personal items will not be scattered around bedrooms and bathrooms and will make it clear on where guests can spread out and put away their things.

We've put together some top tips on the steps you should take when touching on this topic during your swap arrangement process.

1. Mutual Understanding

Make sure that both parties know if they are swapping for a primary home or a secondary home, this way guests will know how much care they'll have to take when using items around the house.

2. Leave post-its

Always make it clear how you will prepare your house for your guests arrival, for example, when you clear away your cupboard space or any drawers, always leave a note on the space saying "I've cleared this space for you" and also mention it in writing either in a written email or a written guide for your swappers.

3. Ask!

There are some options you can take, you can put all your personal items stored in a cupboard or a spare room and letting your guests know that you have stored your personal items here. When swapping, it's useful for swappers to ask each other which areas of the house they should not use or go into.

4. Lock away

For security, we recommend locking your valuable items in a room or cupboard where possible, or if leave them with friends or family, any way which you feel comfortable with.

5. Be assured

Always remember that the key thing is you feel comfortable with how you leave your home when you go away. Home swapping is no different to leaving your home empty when you go on holiday. Most families would trust a neighbour, family member or close friend to check on their house and their valuables.

Saying that, home swapping is a two way process, so it's very rare we have issues with Love Home Swap members regarding mistreat of their valuables and their home, but the chance of living in someone else's home and living their lifestyle, is one of the main benefits of home swapping!
