About our home

We have 5-year old lowset home over looking the pastures to the south and the township to the north. There is a wide verandah with outdoor lounge and table and chairs. Our gardens are pretty self sufficient -- they just need mowing and an occasional trim. You may want to continue to feed the wild birds. We have a stereo, 2 TVs, a video recorder and DVD player, dish washer, reverse-cycle central air conditioning, broad band internet, washer and dryer. A double garage with a 2006 2-door Toyota Hilux pickup truck and a 2000 4-door Toyota Corolla sedan for your use. The garage has an automatic opener.

Our neighborhood of Hillview Estate is on the edge of the town of Maleny. Our community is in the sub-tropical Sunshine Coast hinterland (1,500 ft elevation), about half way up the east coast of Australia. We are about 30 minutes from surfing beaches on the coast. The Maleny area has a mix of agriculture (including macadamia nuts, avocardos, citrus fruits and bananas), arts and craft activities, and tourism. Because of our elevation we have a higher rainfall than areas on the coast and the climate is milder. For more details, check out the search headings of Maleny and Caloundra on the internet (Caloundra is on the coast but we are part of Caloundra Shire). Most of the homes in our neighbourhood are on 1/2 acre blocks. We are less than an hour from Brisbane airport. Australia Zoo (founded by Steve Irwin, sadly now deceased) is only 20 minutes by car. There is a rainforest reserve overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains within 5 minutes. The township fulfills most community needs -- shopping (including 2 supermarkets), banks, craft shops, restaurants, churches, doctors, dentists, a library and a small hospital. Whatever you interests, you'll probably be able to follow it in Maleny. There are a total of about 80 community, religious, sporting and recreational groups listed in the current directory published by Apex. If you want to experience the "real" Australia, you might not do better than visiting for a while in Maleny.

Both Phil and I are retired university lecturers, and have moved to Maleny from Brisbane in 2002. He taught sociology and business communication, and I taught nursing. Phil is the sporty one -- plays tennis, golf and bike rides. And recently he has renewed his interest in photography, and has just submitted an entry into the Rotary Club of Maleny's photographic competition for their 2008 calendar. I enjoy craft -- knitting, card making, quilting, and embroidery. My only sporting hobby is playing lawn bowls. We have 3 adult daughters who live in Brisbane. One of our daughters will meet you at the airport in Brisbane and introduce you to our home. We will have the Post Office re-direct our mail to our daughter so you won't have to worry about that. Phil's neighbour Terry would be happy to play golf with you at the 9-hole par 3 course at Glenview. Or if you are more energetic, we have friends who play on full length 18-hole courses in the area. If you're into tennis, Phil can put you into contact with members of the Maleny Tennis Club for a social game in whatever age group suits you. We have friends in probably all the church communities in town so can make contacts for you there if you want. Australia is of course a long way from America and it costs a bit to get here, but we think it would be a great experience for you and perhaps also a welcome break from the winter chills of the northern hemisphere. And the bonus is you don't have to pay for accommodation, and nor do we!
