About our home
Our home is a well established gracious home, located in Salamander Bay on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales in Australia. Our home is situated in a quiet street, adjacent to wetlands - a protected reserve for koalas. Yes!!!! You can have koalas on your backyard fence! It is a short walk to the closest beach and 2-3 minutes by car. I have a second car, which could be used by visitors to access all areas nearby and trips into Newcastle and Sydney if desired.
Covering nearly 1,000 kilometers , this beautiful region known as The Port Stephens Area caters for everyone. This region, with its breathtaking natural beauty, is the perfect setting for a memorable summer vacation. A coastal wilderness, sand dunes with such vastness, a marine park for diving and snorkeling, wind surfing and kayaking. Fishing, prawning (shrimping) and crabbing. And of course the best surfing beaches and calm bay areas. Hire a boat and head up the Myall for quiet river ways. There are numerous cruise boats designed to take tourists out for the day for dolphin watching.
The amenities here are numerous - shopping centres, small boutique shops, restaurants, cafés, lifestyle/ decor shops, Fisherman's Co-Op for the freshest seafood, clubs - two golfing clubs( we have numerous kangaroos at dusk on the Nelson Bay Golf Club)..... These clubs offer dining and entertainment, including gambling opportunities. We have a cinema, bowling alley and numerous recreation grounds. As well as a plethora of walking tracks. There is a local brewery producing outstanding craft beers and wine. Oyster farmers and local produce farmers sell their products at local markets. There a number of organisations you could join, depending on your interest - Bridge Club, Historical Society, Conservation Groups . There are a number of gyms operating in the area, two of which are very close to home. I also have a treadmill and medicine ball. Our swimming pool is also ideal for laps. We have quite a number of medical supports - ambulance very nearby, a community hospital and many doctor/ dental professionals.
On our doorstep is Australia's wine growing area - The Hunter Valley Wineries - famous for their semiilion , but also Hunter Reds and Chardonnays......the scenery is magnificent , so many wineries ( you need about 3 days there) , boutique accomodation to houses to villa type dwellings and very generous wine tasting programs and Hatted Restaurants, local produce, arts and crafts. Truly a beautiful place.
Newcastle is our closest largest city, about 45 minutes drive or an 1 hour by bus...... Newcastle is a city undergoing massive transformation, set against magnificent rugged coastal line , this city is a working port with industry as its support. The centre of the city is evolving into cafés, restaurants and apartments. Western Newcastle has Australia's largest inland waterway - Lake Macquarie. Newcastle has a a strong music scene, centred on the pubs and wine bars. It is a university town and has a vibrant social scene. Large malls, cinema complexes and outstanding surf beaches.
Sydney, our States's capital is 2 hours from Newcastle .... Accessed by car, train or flight from Newcastle Airport , which is 25 minutes from our home in Salamander Bay.
Our home is a large 3 double bedroom home with two study areas, an ensuite bathroom and second bathroom. There are built in wardrobes in each bedroom. We have vast DVD collection set up in a library in a separate room, a study with a daybed and significant book collection - literary, crime, history, film and photography. There is a formal sitting room with sofas and a flat screen television and DVD player, as well as informal sitting room, with sofas ( one of which opens up into a double bed), large flat screen television, DVD collection extended and double doors which open up out to the pool area. The kitchen is quite a good size, with a dishwasher, stove top ( gas) , electric oven and microwave. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen, with a dining table seating 8 people. There is a double garage, where the treadmill is located. There is a separate laundry with a washing machine and dryer. The garden virtually looks after itself and we have a gardener who comes in once a week and this would continue in our absence. Our neighbours are " from heaven " and would be available for support, answer questions and help out with any issues which may arise.
