About our home

Our house is in a quiet part of Leuven, an old University town in Flanders, Belgium. We are 20km from Brussels and 10 km from the main airport (Zaventem). Our house is a typical art deco house of the thirties, with stained glass doors. On the ground floor there is a large hall and on the right an open-plan modern and fully equipped kitchen, a kitchenette, a toilet and a dining room; on the left a nice livingroom with a grand piano, and, connected to the kitchen, my studio. On the side of the kitche-n there is a gharden with an open garage, which we use to have parties. On the first floor there are 4 bedrooms (the three children's rooms have beds on high platforms) and one bathroom. On the second floor there's my husband studio (he is a graphic designer). In the cellar there is a laundry room with washer and dryer, my son's the music studio, a tools' room, a wine cellar and a storage room. We are very well positioned to travel to all major historical cities (Brussels, Gand, Bruges) as well as other countries (by train Paris is 1hour 20 min, Amsterdam is 2hours 30 min, Köln 2 hours, London 2hours 20 min). We have Wi-FI in the house. We have a car which may not be up to American standards (it's an Opel Combo) but it's cheap and practical. We also have bicycles. We also have two cats: Striscia and Grigia; they only require to be given some dry food and water, no need to clean any box. Our very nice neighbours can be of help for anything.

More about us

  1. My name is Monica, I am 55 and I am Italian, from Florence. I came to Belgium because I married Marc, my husband of 33 years. We both studied philosophy. My husband moved on to become a graphic designer, while I have been teaching and working for international organisations. We are both interested in the arts, we often organise house concerts; I am on the boarrd of an important Brussels theatre. Our house reflects our interests: books, personal creations, artworks and an eclectic interior!
  2. We have 3 children, who still live with us, though not all the time. Lawrence (23) is a music producer and pianist. Olivia (22) is doing graduate studies in law and is at the moment in Copenhagen for an exchange. Valentina (20) is studying psychology. They also studied music (flute and cello) and dance.
  3. We all speak many languages: English, Dutch, Italian, French. We also have a cottage at the sea in Normandy where we like to go to relax, but which we also rent. We live in an international environment, with many friends in Brussels, which is our main reference point for our cultural interests, together with Amsterdam and Paris.

Where is it?

Buzzy restaurants
Leuven is a students' town, with lovely old buildings, a 'beginage' (an old inner city) that has been restored by the Catholic University. It is famous for its cafés, good food and lovely shops. The new museum is very interesting, as it organises contemporary art exhibitions as well as hosting a permanent collection of ancient art works. In the summer the city is vibrant with music festivals and events. We have a nice neighborhood, and we are close to the green area of the city. We have a modern swimmingpool and sports center just around the corner. We are 15 minutes walk from the train station and on the side of the city that connects to the main highway Bo brussels. Brussels and other Flemish cities offer a lot of history, art, contemporary events, music... Too much to list! Interesting is the first world war site (with trenches and museum) in Ieper, at the coast, which is only two hours from Leuven! We can help with tips and ideas for the visit!
