About our home
This comfortable 1250 square foot waterfront cottage is located on the rugged Bruce Peninsula area near the town of Wiarton on Georgian Bay, 3 hours drive north of Toronto. It is a recently built home (2003) with all the amenities. The cottage property is serene and secluded. It sits up on a small cliff with a natural stone staircase leading from the cottage down to the shoreline, which is made up of large pebbles and plateaus. The water is gradual entry with a rocky bottom and provides great swimming opportunities (swimming shoes are recommended). The 250 ft of private shoreline includes a fire pit, a picnic table and Muskoka chairs so vacationers can enjoy the lakefront. There is a canoe and kayak at the water to explore the shoreline and a windsurfer for the more adventurous.
The cottage has ample deck space (approx 300 square feet/ metres), with shade and sun. The larger deck is accessible from the kitchen/dining room area through a sliding glass door and has a comfortable patio furniture set with a table, chairs and umbrella so that the view can be enjoyed. The whimsical wrought iron railing ensures that the view of the lake is not obscured, as well as allowing for a refreshing breeze off the water. A propane BBQ and lounge chairs (for adults and children) are also found here. There is a staircase from this upper deck to the fire pit below and from there, the water access. The deck is also accessible from another smaller staircase at the front of the house. Both staircases have gates. A smaller deck (off the master bedroom) also overlooks the water and fire pit and wraps around the cottage to be accessible to the grounds.
Although the cottage is in the midst of many trees, the area around the building has been professionally landscaped with a beautiful natural stone fountain at the entrance and several walkways around the building.
There is ample space for kids to play, as well as a playground area and beautiful gardens. The cottage is set back from the roadway to ensure privacy.
This recently built (“Viceroy- Surfside”) cottage has all the amenities of home. It is winterized, which means it can be enjoyed year round. In the entrance area there is a bathroom with shower and laundry facilities. The fair sized kitchen has maple cabinetry and ample cabinet space and is well equipped (fridge, stove, microwave, bread machine, etc.). The dining area seats 10 comfortably at an oak harvest table.
The kitchen, dining and living rooms are open concept, all on one level. This is accented by a cathedral-style cedar ceiling in the main area, and hardwood floors throughout. In the living room there are numerous seats, including a couch and comfortable chairs. There is also a wood-burning fireplace, a stereo with an i-pod hook-up, indoor and outdoor speakers, and expansive windows overlooking the lake and fire pit. There is a small TV and VCR with a huge selection of children’s videos. There are also many games and books to choose from.
In the master bedroom, there is a queen size bed, pine furniture and doors leading out to a private deck. In another bedroom, there is a double/twin size maple bunk bed and a good selection of children’s books and toys. A third bedroom includes a maple double bunk bed. The mattresses are extremely comfortable! All bedrooms have ceiling fans, although the basement tends to keep the cottage cool during the summer months. There is a 4-piece bathroom with a heated floor in between these bedrooms.
The full size basement is unfinished, although it has a requisite beer fridge and plenty of space for children to run and play should the weather be inclement. It also has a wood burning stove and several bicycles available to explore the area as well as a collection of snorkeling gear and floaties. If winter is your chosen season, there are also snowshoes and toboggans available. The basement is well lit with many windows and has a door that leads outside to the fire pit area and the woodpile.
If privacy and relaxation is what you crave, this is a place for you. The "Bruce” as the locals call it has many points of interest. It is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year- although each season has benefits. Autumn is when the leaves turn colours. Many people make a pilgrimage here to witness this time of the year. Winter is great to cross country ski, snowshoe and enjoy the heat of the wood burning stove. Spring is cool, but a great time to go hiking and explore the area. Fortunately black flies and mosquitoes are rare in this area. Of course, summer is also wonderful with many things to do. There are hiking opportunities on the Bruce Trail, (http://brucetrail.org) which runs a short hike behind the cottage. Other activities include: golfing nearby at the Wiarton Golf Club; mountain biking at The Bruce Mountain Bike Adventure Park (http://www.mtbthebruce.com); taking a helicopter ride with the local helicopter company (www.brucepeninsulahelicopters.com), and scuba diving and boat cruises in Tobermory (considered one of the best wreck diving destinations in North America) which is about an hour away. Water activities also include canoeing, salmon fishing, swimming, windsurfing, wakeboard surfing, and more. To see what else the Bruce offers, you are encouraged to visit www.brucepeninsula.org.
This cottage is also about a half hour from the amazing 5 km long sand beach at Sauble Beach, and only 8 km from the community of Wiarton. Wiarton is a full service community with groceries, liquor and beer stores, marina, candy store, plenty of shopping, a “Tim Horton’s” (Canada’s favourite coffee shop), airport and a hospital. A visit to this area wouldn't be complete without meeting Wiarton Willie, our albino groundhog weather prognosticator! His abode is located at the well-stocked library. Have your picture taken beside his statue in Bluewater Park!
The proximity to all of these activity opportunities, combined with the cozy nature of the cottage, provides a great setting for an enjoyable holiday.
