About our home

In Cuba, some homes are called biplantas (meaning two levels). They are like a vertical duplex; each family owns the entirety of the lower or upper level. This property is the upper level of a biplanta on the beautiful Bay of Matanzas, 150 sq. meters with three bedrooms, two bathrooms remodeled from top to bottom in 2016. The home was built in the 1950s, and is on an upscale waterfront street in the city of Matanzas, Cuba (known as the "The Athens of Cuba"). One block away is the Via Blanca, the seaside highway that connects Havana to the gorgeous Varadero beach, which is about a 20 minute drive from Matanzas.

Matanzas is a 420+ year old Cuban city with a population of about 150,000. The city has lots of art galleries, museums, theater, music, good restaurants. The weather is either hot or warm, even in the winter! We have icy cold air conditioners in each bedroom, or you can choose to open all the windows and get the sea breezes flowing through the house. What we don't have is internet access, which doesn't allow us to offer amenities like Netflix or wifi. This isn't available yet to Cubans. Cuban TV via antenna is pretty useless anyway, so no televisions yet, although we will be putting one in the house in early 2017.

A half a block away is a super restaurant El Bukan (#1 on TripAdvisor for Matanzas) where you can eat lunch and dinner for about US$5. In the city center, which is about 1/2 mile away along the bayfront, there are lots of things to do. The city is home to numerous sandy beaches, the smallest of which is 1 block from the house, called "Playa Allende." "Playa Tennis" is the largest sandy beach in Matanzas, which you will find on the way to the city center along the bayfront.

In the city center at Liberty Square ("Parque Libertad") is another favorite restaurant, Restaurante Romantico San Severino. We usually go to El Bukan since it's 30 seconds away, but I liked San Severino very much the one time I visited. Liberty Square is where the Cubans connect to wifi for $2 / hour. Residential homes are not yet able to buy internet service.

If you rent a car or hire a driver for the day, you could visit one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Varadero Beach, a 20 minute drive. There are also Viazul buses from Matanzas daily. Check their website for more info.

Bottom line: our house is a place to go for the warm tropical weather, to experience Cuba and its robust culture, inexpensive meals, beach, swimming. Disconnect!!
