About our home
Quietly situated in the centre of the tiny village of Lanquais, one of the prettiest villages of the Dordogne. Chateau de Lanquais is across valley and a lake for swimming is a few hundred yards. Close to amenities. Driving distance to golf course. Built in 1800 from local yellow sandstone, the house is one of the largest and most important of the village. It is located in the very heart of the village on a quiet, narrow lane and has splendid views of the chateau, the old buildings of the village and the surrounding countryside. The shop, church and post-office are about 100 yards from the front door and the auberge is about 5 minutes walk. There is a small, flower filled garden opposite the property which belongs to it and to the rear, there is a large adjoining garden and orchard overlooking the surrounding fields. The house has been sympathetically restored to bring-out the best of the early nineteenth century features and has been decorated and furnished in a luxury, modern and sophisticated style.
The house is very spacious, elegant and airy, with high ceilings, Italian marble floors, period features, beautiful wood floors upstairs and a magnificent, wide, circular wooden staircase.
Bedroom 1 has a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with bath, shower,wash-basin and wc. Access also from landing.
Bedroom 2 has a king-size bed.
Bedroom 3 has a double bed and en suite bathroom with large shower, wash-basin, wc and access from the landing.
Bedroom 4 has 2 single beds.
Downstairs modern shower-room with basin, wc and washing machine.
The kitchen is a very large room incorporating a living area with sofa, working fireplace and dresser. Full range of painted cupboards under granite tops, eye-level cupboards, butler's sink, extractor hood over ceramic hob - halogen heating, circotherm oven, dishwasher.
Sitting room with marble fireplace, 2 linen-covered sofas, TV cabinet with DVD player, large footstool, bookcase and other furniture. Dining room with round table and chairs. Both rooms with high, beamed ceilings and antique painted furniture.
Due to the setting of the house, the large kitchen/living room is upstairs at garden level and leads onto the large, stone terrace and gardens. The beautiful, well stocked gardens and small orchard, on different levels and backing onto open farmland, are a real feature of the property. There is plenty of garden furniture and a barbecue. The large gardens have many stone steps in places and are unsuited to small children.
Since the property is on two levels, set into the hillside with stone steps in many places, it is unsuited to wheelchair users.
Although there is no pool, there is a lake within easy walking distance, which has swimming, boating and other leisure activities, together with a lifeguard at peak times.
There are 4 good golf courses within easy striking distance. The magnificent Chateau des Vigiers Golf Course is approximately 30 km. This is a 27 hole par 71/72 course, built on 3 x 9 hole loops. It also has excellent restaurant facilities and club-house.There is a small - but quite challenging - 9 hole par 35 course at Chateau les Merles, which is only 5 minutes by car from the house. Water hazards, bunkers and greens are all well maintained. This also has a very good bar/terrace and restaurant. Golf La Marterie is in a stunning setting, about 40km from the house, at St Felix de Reilhac. This is an 18 hole par 73 course of high standards. A little further is Domaine de Rochebois (57km) which is a 9 hole par 36 course. It has a varied circuit running along the Dordogne Valley with exceptional views. The well tended greens are challengingly protected by bunkers and stretches of water.
The nearest airport is Bergerac which is 15 mins drive, served by Flybe and Ryanair from the UK. Bordeaux airport is about 1hr 30 mins drive. The use of a car is recommended to explore the area fully. The port of Calais is approximately 8 hours 30 mins travel by car.
The characterful market town of Lalinde (market on Thursday) is 8km and has some very good food shops and small supermarket. Bergerac is 18km distant.
