About our home
Built circa 1860, our boutique style/furnished home, is an old schoolhouse on the stunning and world famous Isle of Skye. The schoolhouse has original features whilst being fully modernised with all mod cons.
Bespoke oak and plank furniture, quality carpets (including a made to order, luxurious wool and silk, deep pile carpet in the master bedroom) an eclectic mix of antiques, curio's and art add to the boutique design.
Our home is a great place to chill out and or discover all Skye has to offer. Sit by the fire in a chair fashioned from whiskey barrel staves, or chill out on the comfy leather sofa’s, watch TV, DVD‘s, read, look out at the garden or out to sea, sit in the garden listening to the beautiful birdsong, cowbells and chimes that hang from trees and 'sing' in the the breeze...come to Skye, to the Old Schoolhouse, take some time out to reflect………..
Superb location with lovely sea views across Loch Eyre, garden and hills. Garden with raspberry bushes, beautiful trees and hedgerows. You can lay in the hammock watching Eagles and buzzards soar overhead. There are numerous benches and tables so you can breakfast and dine outside, a chimnea to ensure you stay warm whatever the weather in the evenings.
Listen to constant birdsong in the trees, shrubs and hedges. Dolphins, whales, seals, sharks all here to see on the numerous boat trips available and we would be delighted to show you all the best places. We have seen, geese, owls, buzzards and herons in the last week (May) in the garden. Dolphin pods were spotted in the loch this week also and many hundreds around the island with minke whales also spotted this week.
The house/garden is in an excellent Dark Sky location, perfect for watching the auroborealis (northern lights)
Excellent walks within minutes of the house, chambered cairns, standing stones and walks along the shore up country lanes just literally on the doorstep.
The Isle of Skye, deservedly, has the reputation of being the Jewel of the Scottish highlands and once here, you will understand why everyone falls in love with the island.
From the Majestic Cuillin Mountains (the finest climbing and walks in the UK), Out door ‘wild swimming’ locations such as the fairy pools, bizarre rock formations (featured in upcoming Prometheus Movie), gentle walks , outdoor pursuits and culture Skye has something fro everyone. Boatrips from Elgol will take you right into the heart of the Cuillin Hills for a days exploring, the scenery here is breathtaking and this is a must do day out, other boat trips from here will take you to Eigg, Rum, Canna and Muck. Boat trips are around the island to see just about every part.
We are just minutes drive from the picturesque and bustling fishing port of Portree, capital of Skye, with quality restaurants all shops and banks etc. Here you will find boat trips to see seals, dolphins, puffins and Britain's rarest bird of prey, The White tailed Sea Eagle. One thing is guaranteed, you WILL see a talking Squirrel, Gift shops selling crafts form near and far. Sheepskin rugs to Harris Tweed.
Skye was voted 4th best Island destination (in the world) by National Geographic Magazine. An ideal destination for all outdoor types, nature lovers or anyone just wanting a romantic place to chill out.
Skye wins accolade after accolade for scenery, romance and culture its ferry journeys and arrival by train. Skye is now also a big hit with ‘foodies‘. We have some of the worlds best restaurants with the award winning 3 Chimneys restaurant, Lady Claire’s, Michelin Starred Kinloch Lodge and our personal favourite, The Duisdale. Quality fresh seafood is everywhere, served however you like, mussels, langoustines, lobster, all varieties of local fish, its food heaven…..
Wildlife is in abundance Eagles, seals, dolphins, whales, basking sharks, puffins, sea eagles , all fairly common. Standing stones and chambered cairns just as said, minutes walk away from property. Castles, distilleries, art galleries abound everywhere. Rich flora, fauna and scenery regularly attract Hollywood’s largest directors and actors (Ridley Scot last month filming Prometheus). Previous Movies filmed on Skye recently, Harry Potter, Stardust, Made of Honour.
Outdoor pursuits include, Kayaking, Mountain climbing (we can arrange experienced guides to take you, even if you have no experience) Walking, Sailing, Boatrips, Windsurfing, Mountain Biking, Skye is getting a name for great bike tracks and the Track at Sligachan is award winning. Danny MacAskill (inspired bicycles) hails from Skye. Fishing (Skye has fabulous trout and salmon fishing many just minutes away and you can charter boats to take right out to sea and maybe even catch a shark!) There are great out door centres with loads more activities.
Castles & culture, Dunvegan Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, Armadale, Moil, Duntulm, Dunsgaith, There are dozens, from ruins to still inhabited, there are a host you can visit. Art galleries, museums, centres, crofting, the way of life is just a pleasure to watch and become involved in. Writers and artists flock here for inspiration from Sir Walter Scott, Boswell and Johnson to modern day script writers.
Despite what you may think Skye is relatively easy to access by car, plane, or train, we can help with any advice or even recommended places to stop over on the way here.
