For any newlywed, your honeymoon should be the ultimate trip of a lifetime. But the events of the past couple of years mean that many weddings and honeymoons have been put on hold. Happily life is now returning to normal, so whether you’re newly married or you’ve been patiently waiting and saving for a post-wedding celebration, we’ve collated the best honeymoon destinations for every couple. From adventure holidays for thrill-seekers, through to gloriously relaxing beach getaways for those that prefer a gentler introduction to married life, we’ve rounded up some of the best honeymoon ideas.

When anyone thinks of a tropical, relaxing honeymoon, it’s fair to say that many of us picture the beautiful idyll of Hawaii. As the ideal destination for exploring all things water-related, Hawaii is a great spot for couples who are looking to enjoy surfing, swimming and paddle boarding. If that all sounds a bit too energetic for you, then snorkelling and diving are a great (and gentler) way to explore the vast array of wildlife found surrounding the islands, and you might even spot giant sea turtles or manta rays. If you feel more comfortable on dry land, then consider having an oceanside couples massage, or rent a car so that you can drive the epically beautiful Hana Highway – take a picnic, as there’s simply loads of romantic spots for a dreamy lunch by waterfalls and on rocky beaches.

Amalfi Coast

There are a million reasons why the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy is top of many honeymooner’s bucket list destinations. With colourful, pastel-coloured village streets and a craggy coastline scattered with great sunbathing and swimming spots, plus incredible restaurants and cafes around every corner, it’s a recipe for a great European honeymoon break. The towns of Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello all offer an unforgettable break – better yet, try to visit several of them! The Amalfi Coast is also a great point to explore other areas of Italy. You’re just a boat ride away from the stunning island of Capri, as well as a short train ride from Pompeii for any couples who are history buffs.

Home to Europe’s greenest city Ljubljana, ancient castles, thermal springs and lush alpine mountains, Slovenia remains an underrated gem in Europe, yet it’s undoubtedly one of the best honeymoon destinations. Although the country has grown in popularity in recent years, it has managed to avoid the hustle and bustle of many of Europe’s more well-known counterparts, so it’s ideal for a slower, more relaxed honeymoon experience. We’d recommend exploring the Julian Alps, enjoying the many walks nearby, visiting the famous Lake Bled, and even climbing Slovenia’s highest mountain Triglav (that also happens to feature on the Slovenian flag).

Sri Lanka

Known as the teardrop of India, the diverse island of Sri Lanka is home to lush rainforests, incredible wildlife, white sand beaches and stunning citadels and ruins. The island caters for every kind of traveller, with luxury foodie experiences in the upmarket fortified city of Galle, hiking adventures in the ancient ruins of Sigirya and Polonnaruwa, wildlife-spotting excursions in Yala or Udawalawe National Parks, or sunbathing and surfing opportunities at Mirissa and Tangalle. Our top pick would be to pay a visit to the incredible Horton Plains in the central highlands, which is home to some of the island’s richest flora and fauna. It’s only a short distance from the well-visited city of Kandy, so it’s delightfully easy to fit into any honeymooner’s jam-packed itinerary.

When you’re drawing up honeymoon ideas, Mallorca should be high on your list! As the playground for many Hollywood A‑listers and home to luxury hotels and resorts (as well as a superyacht or two), Mallorca is the ultimate destination for newlyweds who are searching for a luxe honeymoon. However, despite this world of glamour, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a quieter, more intimate stay on the island. Mallorca is home to over 260 beaches, many of which are tucked away and only accessible by foot, meaning plenty of opportunities for romantic days out for you and your partner. We’d recommend avoiding the crowds (and the crazy heat) by travelling off-peak in September or October, where temperatures are a much more pleasant 22 degrees.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds may not have the tropical appeal of the Maldives or Bora Bora, but this beautiful region in the south of England offers something special for anyone looking for an alternative to the typical best’ honeymoon destinations. In fact, as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, The Cotswolds is a dreamy, romantic option for anyone looking for a quintessentially English getaway. The area is made up of rolling lush hills and farmland, plus quaint stone villages filled with thatched chocolate box cottages and cosy pubs by the canals. Get your walking boots on to enjoy the great outdoors (or wellies, depending on how lucky you are with the weather) and head straight for the Cotswold Way which is a walking and cycling trail that will take you through the countryside and lavender fields. Other top pastimes include antique shopping in Stow-on-the-Wold, strolling along the famous canals in Bourton-on-the-Water, or enjoying a delectable afternoon tea at Tisanes Tea Rooms, which has over 30 teas to choose from.

The Greek Islands

There’s something magical about the Greek islands. With stunning scenery, crystal clear blue waters and white buildings, plus a rich history and mythology that will keep you entertained for weeks on end, the islands are simply one of the top honeymoon ideas to consider. With hundreds of islands to choose from, there are numerous options for every type of honeymooner. When people think of celebrating their nuptials on the Greek islands, many gravitate towards the iconic and stunning Santorini, famous for its blue domed buildings, pretty windmills and trailing bougainvillea. Although stunning, it can get pretty busy. As an alternative for couples looking for a romantic getaway, we’d recommend a visit to Paxos. Located near Corfu, this picture-perfect retreat is only accessible by boat, and is famous for its stunning beaches. Want more inspiration? Our guide to the best Greek islands to visit will help you and your partner find the perfect match.

If the dream vision for your honeymoon involves adventure and you’re keen to see nature up-close, then Kenya is one of the best honeymoon destinations for you. Top of everyone’s list should be visiting the world-famous Masai Mara. Located on the northern part of the great Serengeti and neighbouring nearby Tanzania, this epic nature reserve is the perfect place to see the great migration of the wildebeest. You can also see elephants in Amboseli National Park (with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in the distance) or marvel at a thousands of flamingos at Lake Nakuru National Park, which is home to over 250 different species of birds.

If you’re looking for a honeymoon destination with variety, Vietnam has it all. From the lush rice paddies in the Sa Pa region through to the sandy beaches in the south and the bustling cities scattered in-between, Vietnam is a unique yet brilliant honeymoon idea. We’d recommend taking your time with a longer honeymoon, starting in the north in Hanoi, before travelling down to Ho Chi Minh City, and stopping in Hue and Hội An along the way. Whilst you’re in the north, make sure you visit the world-famous Hạ Long Bay. To make the most of this spectacular sight, we’d suggest enjoying a night’s stay onboard one of the many traditional boats that run excursions out to these magical rock formations, so that you can also visit the many caves within them.

If you’re looking for a honeymoon that has it all, Bali in Indonesia is the perfect destination. Boasting stunning temples, vibrant markets, expansive rice paddies and volcanic mountains, there’s so much on offer in this diverse island in the Indonesian archipelago. Many go to Bali for the luxurious villa experience (happily our members have some exquisite Balinese villas that you could consider for your travels), but don’t forget that there’s much more to this island than just infinity pools and luxury resorts. We’d recommend trying the daredevil slides at Waterbom Bali, visiting the monkeys at Ubud Monkey Forest, exploring the rice terraces in Ubud or Tabanan, and watching the sunrise or sunset from the top of Mount Batur.
