By Ellena Morgan - 13 minute read

As the Northern Hemisphere heads into the colder months, we’re already lamenting the loss of our balmy summer evenings. But fret not, because we’ve got plenty of ideas on the best winter sun holidays! Whether you’re dreaming of a tropical Christmas sun holiday, or you’re simply wanting to find the ideal place to top up your tan, we’ve got some great suggestions on the best places to escape the cold this winter.

Warm winter destinations homes Bali

Picture yourself lounging by this stunning pool!

Bali, Indonesia

Although known as being a big holiday destination, years of tourism haven’t deteriorated Bali’s incredible charm and history. Famous for its forested volcanic mountains, rice paddies and coral reefs, this incredibly beautiful island has a lot to offer. Culture-wise, a visit to the Tanah Lot, a traditional Balinese temple located on a small, rocky island is a must-see. For nature lovers, Bali has an abundance of waterfalls, and you really should take the time to visit at least one or two. We’d suggest detouring via Sekumpul Waterfalls in the north of the island, or Tegenungan Waterfall which is north-east of Denpasar.

Give staggering views of the bay from the panoramic terrace.

Cape Town, South Africa

One of the best winter sun holidays has to be the beautiful coastal city of Cape Town. Arrange a home swap here during the country’s summer months, and you’ll quickly see that there has never a better time to visit! With a varied landscape offering beaches, mountains, harbours and gardens, there’s a staggeringly wide array of places to explore.

For families and animal lovers, then set aside some time to marvel at the amazing Boulders Beach, which is home to over 3,000 penguins. If beaches aren’t your thing, then you can relax at the many open-air pools, explore the neighbouring vineyards, immerse yourself in a museum or see the city from afar by taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain.

Children will appreciate the delightful pool at this stunning home swap.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is a city that’s full of rich history, which makes it the perfect hot cultural getaway for those of us seeking more than just a beach. All across the city you can take in the stunning Moorish architecture and explore the many mosques, palaces and gardens. In the Djemaa El Fna in the centre of town, you can browse and barter at the many traditional stalls, and marvel at the snake charmers in action.

Although stunning, the city centre isn’t ideal for staying with children as it can feel very intense after a few hours. Instead, reach out to our members to arrange a home swap, so that the kids have some much-needed space to relax and play after a day of sightseeing.

Decisions, decisions… will you opt for the pool or jacuzzi first?!

Barbados, Caribbean

With calm coastlines to the west and great surf in the south, Barbados is the perfect winter sun destination for whatever kind of beach-goer you are. As a friendly and welcoming island, many visitors love the fact that they feel safe here, which means you can freely explore all that the island has to offer. While the beaches are undeniably epic, be sure not to neglect the centre of the island, which boasts amazing sights such as plantation houses, beautiful botanical gardens and caves set amongst vast fields of sugar cane.

The best months to travel tend to be January to April, making this an ideal option for escaping the cold. Hotels and holiday rentals can be pricey during these months, so make your vacation budget go further with a dreamy home swap.

Tropical and dreamy — take us there!

Belize

If you’re looking for something more than just a sleepy beach holiday, then Belize is the place for you. Spend your time exploring the ancient Maya pyramids and temple ruins, marvel at the free-roaming monkeys, and go scuba diving in the famous Belize Barrier Reef. You could even try diving at the famous Blue Hole, or go ziplining through the rainforest!

With highs of 80°F (27°C), Belize offers guaranteed heat, the most inviting crystal clear waters and the lushest scenery imaginable — making this one of the top winter sun holiday destinations you could possibly hope to explore.

Cool off after a busy day of sightseeing in the luxurious pool.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Famous for its lush greenery and forested mountains, northern Thailand offers something quite different to the more touristy spots. In fact, some of Thailand’s most exciting and bustling cities (like Bangkok) and coastline resorts (like Koh Tao and Ko Samui) offer up an exciting Christmas sun holiday prospect — but it’s Chiang Mai’s sleepier delights that will enable you to really get away from it all.

With beautiful architecture and a refreshing breeze that will enable you to pack in plenty of sightseeing, the old city is a joy. So much so, that many tourists are happy to just intersperse massages with exploring the night bazaar and trying out the local great dining options! However, if you are feeling energetic and you feel like exploring, then we’d suggest taking an elephant safari, joining a hike to meet the mountain tribes or simply heading to the many cliff-top temples and national parks. Doi Suthep and Doi Ithanon are perhaps the most famous of these local attractions.

Maui, Hawaii

Escaping to the Hawaiian islands during the festive season is the definition of the ultimate tropical retreat — and with reassuringly familiar traditions such as Santa, it’s not too much of a cultural shock for younger home swappers! So yes, we’d definitely recommend Hawaii for a Christmas sun holiday — though add in a few luxurious touches to really elevate your day.

Hawaii is known for its unspoiled white sandy beaches and laid-back lifestyle, so start your Christmas Day with a morning’s surf, followed by Christmas dinner on the beach. This might be a lu’au, which is an underground pit that is used to cook delicacies such as long rice, pork joints and salmon. If you’re travelling with kids, make sure you take them to see Santa — though he might rock up in his red swim shorts and pose for photos by his outrigger canoe! With temperatures around 32C, Hawaii offers a great prospect for guaranteed warmth in which to make lifelong memories.

Warm winter destinations homes Sonoma

Beautiful and minimalist, this property has it all.

Sonoma Valley, California

Although Napa may be one of the most famous wine counties in California, Sonoma Valley has maintained its peaceful vibe, and provides a great winter sun holiday option for tasting authentic, Californian wine without navigating the crowds of tourists. Not too far from San Francisco and dotted with family-run vineyards and stunning countryside, this area is the perfect sunshine spot, even if you’re not a wine fan.

Sonoma happens to be a foodie paradise, and there are plenty of options like farmers markets to keep you entertained. If you’d rather not cook when you’re vacationing, then there are various farm-to-table dining options in the region, while the cheese trail is a delight! After all that indulgence, you’ll be in need of a little exercise, so take a stroll in the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve or explore the beaches at North and South Salmon Creek.

A modern delight, this spacious home is gorgeous.

Sunshine Coast, Australia

The Sunshine Coast is most definitely one of the top winter sun destinations. With the most beautiful pristine beaches, fun towns to explore and plenty of watersports to keep the children entertained, it offers something for everyone. The whole stretch of coastline is insanely pretty, but we’d suggest putting Coolum Beach, Wurtulla Beach and Mooloolaba on your list — the later has regularly been cited as one of Australia’s top beaches (high praise indeed), while Wurtulla is delightfully peaceful. Maleny, Caloundra and Noosa Heads are lovely little towns heaving with bistros and boutiques, while the markets at Eumundi are incredibly fun.

If you’re looking for epic scenery and great hiking options, then the Glass House Mountains are stunning, while the iconic Australia Zoo is just on the doorstep. Surfers are also in for a treat, as there are simply loads of great spots to hit the waves.
