Originally from Seattle, Tarah and Keith escaped the rain of the North West coast and swapped it for retiring in the sunshine in Mexico. They swap their stunning vacation home in Quintana Roo and have completed their first ever home swap in Amsterdam this summer. We wanted to know how retirement is treating them and what other home swaps they have planned.

What made you first consider a home swap?

We were heading to the Baltic for a cruise but wanted to spend a week in Amsterdam. It was our first time in Amsterdam so we thought it would be a nice time to check out the area. We decided to swap for Points as it was what worked best for that time of year.

What do you see as the biggest difference between doing a home swap vs. other forms of travel accommodation?

Doing a home swap saves us a bit of money to use on other things while traveling, so our experience is more about the city and less about where we sleep. It's nice to stay in a home as you get more of a feel of what it's like to live there. Hotels don't give you that feeling.

Home swapping allowed the Tarah and Keith to enjoy more activities whilst in Amsterdam and spend less on accommodation

Do you have any other home swaps planned?

We are trying to plan one for Venice for next summer

Did you find by home swapping you were able to get a bigger space to enjoy whilst travelling?

We did get more space staying in a home. Must larger than a hotel as you get a full kitchen and plenty of living space.

If you could give advice to anyone who is thinking of home swapping what would it be?

Communicate with the owners and swap contact information just in case any issues arise. Be respectful of each other's homes.

What would you say is your favourite thing about home swapping?

Getting to see what it's like to live in different areas/countries.

You have hosted a Points home swap twice. What do you enjoy about hosting members during home swaps and do you find this different from renting your vacation home?

I enjoy swapping for homes and Points. Points allow us to go places pretty much anytime but we are always open for exchanges. As far as hosting, people tend to treat your life as if it's their own.

More space, local communities and looking after pets are just some of the great things about choosing to home swap over hotels
