Carolyn and Geoff have been Love Home Swap members since July 2013, and have so far been on an amazing 16 swaps with us so far! The couple live in a large 1867 house in a villa 35km from Canberra, but have several holiday homes across Queensland.

‘I came across Love Home Swap when researching home swapping (as an idle thought). The point of difference that appealed to me was the option of Points swapping. This gave us the flexibility that persuaded my husband to agree to joining.’

As Geoff worked overseas for many years, the couple were seeking an alternative to the sterile unfriendly hotels they used to stay in.

‘My husband worked for many years overseas on short term assignments where we stayed in hotels. I found them sterile, unfriendly environments, often in business environments. Not much room for adventures – even for someone like me who seeks out such things. Home swaps, be they grand or more modest are always in an area where real people live and offer the comforts of home. Our main priority is location. We Do not worry about matching the status of our respective homes.'

In June, the couple stayed at Manolis’ holiday apartment on the Greek Island of Crete for five days and also at Kate’s villa for four days.

’52 years ago we had our honeymoon in Greece, camping in a small tent in an olive grove on the island of Corfu. We have just returned from 6 weeks on Crete, each with 10 kilos of luggage and staying in 3 boutique hotels and 2 home swaps. We were transported back to our youth, living a simple life, eating delicious super fresh food, and swimming daily off rocky coves. Our déjà vu reactions were surprising for us, but beguiling. We have already chosen a beautiful southern Crete town called Paleochora for 1-month next year.’

‘We were bowled over by how much the arts are flourishing in Crete. We had dinner with a famous guitarist and composer who collaborated with Nana Mouscouri and Dennis Roussos, met an ageing rock musician still making CDs, went for drinks at a guitarist/signer performance outside the singer’s café and attended free, high standard folkloric concerts in Rethymnon. For us it is not so much the money saved in swapping, but more the authentic experience. We swapped points with a charming couple from Almyrida area near Chania, and they had stayed with us last Christmas. It was ideal In that we had our own separate apartment, but we met up frequently and were shown special places by them. They have become friends. We also had a Points swap in a spacious apartment in the sweet little seaside village of Mirtos where you looked out directly onto wonderfully craggy mountains.’

In the future, the couple are looking to maybe spend some time at one of their guest’s homes in Darwin…

‘At the moment we have a lovely family from Darwin staying on a Points swap exploring Canberra after a ski trip. Perhaps our next swap will at their tropical home in Darwin after a boat trip from Broome to Darwin. More adventures to come…’
