Wanting to get away this winter with the family, but struggling on deciding on a destination? With so many options available, it can sometimes be difficult to decide on one place to travel. Thankfully, Love Home Swap have brought you our personal favourite places for the whole family to visit. Whether that’s the predictable classics (hey, they’re popular for a reason), to the more unconventional trips to avoid the crowds..

1. Whistler, Canada

Whistler-Blackcomb ski resort is an accessible, family-friendly town. Voted one of the best ski resorts in North America and a proud host of the Winter Olympics, the town offers a host of activities both in the day and the evenings for families and is perfect for the outdoorsy types.

There’s a host of things on for the active types; including dog sledding, their famous tube park, ziplining, ice skating and snowmobiling as well as a number of activities in their Olympic park-like bobsleighing.

However, our favourite (which works well for those tired from a day of skiing) is to take a trip of the resort’s peak2peak gondola from Whistler mountain to Blackcomb mountain. Although not a workout like the other activities, this will still make for a heart-racing experience and then stop for a hot chocolate and waffles at Whistler’s infamous ‘Crystal Hut’ at the top of Blackcomb mountain.

2. Cape Town, South Africa

Another one that may not scream winter getaway, Cape Town is a great destination for those seeking to soak up some winter sun whilst exploring the outdoors. This city boasts numerous opportunities for nature lovers, making it the perfect place to explore with children.

Our favourite on natural places to go is Boulders beach. Although Cape Town boasts numerous fabulous beaches, Boulders is home to a resident penguin-breeding colony. There’s also an abundance of parks and open spaces – perfect for cycle rides and picnicking with the whole family. If weather’s not on your side, then there’s also a bunch of great indoor activities – including aquariums, go-karting and a host of museums. If you’re wanting to fit in some sport, although Cape Town may lack in snow, you can try out sandboarding. Similar in technique to snowboarding, this unique sport is growing in popularity in the city and makes an unusual and memorable day out for the whole family. Find out more here.

3. New York, USA

This bustling city makes a great winter getaway to the variety that the metropolis offers and has a definite family appeal.

First stop should always be central park - go ices skating on Wollman Rink or Lasker Rink and take in the mix of urban and rural views. You can also do one of the many tours of the park or see a real-life snow leopard in Central Park zoo.

In terms of other sites, there’s the famous Christmas tree in Rockefeller Centre to the beautifully decorated storefronts along Fifth Avenue. For some education, New York offers many affordable museums and galleries to explore to escape the cold including The American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Modern art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (all with great complimentary classes and programmes).

4. Florida, USA

Florida is a big state, but with its cooler more bearable weather in the winter and endless sunshine, there’s plenty to explore in this southern state for you and the family.

From the rollercoaster capital of Orlando for the thrill-seekers (think Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld) to the Cuban vibes of Miami offering fantastic cultural and culinary experiences.

This varied state offers so much to those looking for a warmer, sandier alternative to staying at home this winter. Our best picks would be to take a visit to Florida’s everglades – with their own national park and the only place in the world where both alligators and crocodiles co-exist together, it’s a fantastic experience for the whole family to enjoy.

5. Wales, UK

For those dreaming of a British country retreat, Wales is often less explored (and therefore cheaper) of British countries to visit. A small nation just the size of Lake Ontario, this minute country has a lot to offer for families.

In the North, you can enjoy an action-packed holiday for the whole family. Enjoy Bounce below, trampolines inside underground caves or brave Zipworld, the world’s fastest zipline going up to 100pmh. In the south, you have a rich coastline of rugged beaches and charming seaside towns such as St. David’s in Pembrokeshire and The Mumbles near Swansea.

6. Lapland, Finland

Lapland will always be held as a the winter wonderland that is Lapland will always be held as the ultimate festive trip of your children’s dreams. Although notoriously pricey, there are ways to save money in this magical place – including home swapping rather than hotels, researching well into Christmas experiences and excursions, and eating in rather than out.

Some experiences may be overrated, but we always recommend dog sleigh rides, visiting Santa (make sure to look into what comes in the package – how long do you spend with Santa? What gifts are involved?)
