If you're thinking of visiting Europe this winter, it's a wonderful time to explore some of the most beautiful Christmas markets on offer. There are plenty of options in whatever city you decide to visit, but we at Love Home Swap have decided to handpick our personal favourites for this season...

1. Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s Christmas markets or ‘Krippenmarkts’ have been held in the city dating all the way back to 1298. Nowadays, over 20 official Advent Markets sell a vast array of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats. Make sure you book your trip over the weekend, as they have free choirs playing in the market on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

2. Brussels, Belgium

Brussels is one of Belgium’s biggest Christmas Markets – at an incredible 2km long, with over 250 stalls offering all sorts of gifts and souvenirs. Running from the 24th November to 31st December, there’s plenty of time to stock up on Belgian chocolates for the whole family.

3. Tivoli Gardens - Copenhagen, Denmark

Now, there are several markets across this unique city, but the place that oozes Christmas is the famous Tivoli Gardens. The second oldest theme park in the world (losing out to another Danish theme park), it is full of hand-painted, intricate rides that stand the test of time, and the perfect place to browse stalls whilst taking in the amazing lights display. This magical place is a Christmas tradition amongst locals and visitors and is a perfect evening for the whole family.

4. Frankfurt Market – Birmingham, England

Yes, this is a little confusing. Although we want to question whoever gave this market its name, it’s a no-brainer that Frankfurt Market in Birmingham is one of the best Christmas markets in the UK. The market has run for over 15 years and is the centrepiece of the city during the festive period, attracting visitors from across the UK and further afield.

5. Prague, Czech Republic

Christmas markets (also known as Vanocni trh) are a key part of the festive season in the Czech Republic, and the Prague markets are the most impressive in the country. The markets run from the 2nd December to the 6th January, so there's plenty of time to visit (even if you don't have a chance before Christmas).

6. Gothenburg, Sweden

Known as Sweden’s most festive city, the market offers 3km of stalls also known as the ‘Lane of Light’. The market is open from the 25 Nov to 17 Dec 2017. Although the largest market is in Liseberg Amusement Park, there are all kinds of markets across the city to fulfil all your Christmas present needs. For example, stroll down to the old artillery Kronhuset, the streets in the atmospheric Haga district or find unique design items at the Röda Sten Art Centre.
