In search of a Scandinavian escape? Stockholm is not only beautiful but there’s plenty to do on a budget. Here’s the top things to do in Stockholm.

Get lost in the Old Town

Stockholm’s Old Town; Gamla Stan is the ideal place to explore and get lost in. Located on an entire island and dating back to the 13th century, Gamla Stan is full of great independent shops, markets and restaurants. For a great burger try Barrels, Burgers and Beer .

Explore a museum or two

Stockholm isn’t just home to the world famous ABBA Museum. Try the Fotografiska to delve into contemporary photography and don’t forget to head to the top floor afterwards for a stunning view of Stockholm’s skyline and grab yourself a ‘fika’ (a Swedish term meaning for a coffee break usually accompanied by a sweet snack.)

Visit Stortorget Square

Located on the island of Gamla Stan, Stortorget Square is the most famous and oldest squares in Stockholm and a must when visiting. Weave your way through the narrow cobbled alleys of the old town to open into the heart of the island. Filled with street vendors, cafes and boutique stores, the square offers a bustling space to stop for a coffee and take in the city.

Catch the subway

It’s always on everyone’s bucket list when visiting London to catch a ‘tube’, or to ride’s New York City’s famous subway, but Stockholm’s underground system is definitely one to add to your ‘must do’ list. Carved out of bedrock, you feel as if you’re entering an ancient cave whilst your commute. Adorned with custom murals in many stations, each station has a unique charm and surrealist feel between the man-made and the natural rugged rock.

Eat

Located besides the Baltic Sea, Stockholm is the ideal place for fresh fish and seafood. Visit BAR to select fish so fresh that some of it’s still swimming. Or try Hornstulls Marknad (open weekdays) to choose from a food market and to be spoiled for choice.

Visit Strandvägen

One of the most exclusive addresses in Stockholm stretching from the affluent area of Östermalm towards the Djurgården island, Strandvägen is the ideal place for food and views to Gamla Stan and postcard views of Stockholm’s skyline. Whilst here, enjoy a drink and watch passers by in one of the many floating restaurants and bars.
