Some of us relish the weather that winter brings – cocooning ourselves in woolly scarves and enjoying hot drinks on chilly evenings. Others are dreaming of something a little bit warmer. We at Love Home Swap understand that the cold isn’t for everyone, so we’ve come up the perfect list of top destinations to get you that tan top up needed this season.

Bali, Indonesia

Although now known as being a big holiday destination, years of tourism haven’t deteriorated Bali’s incredible charm and history. Known for its forested volcanic mountains, rice paddies and coral reefs , the small island has a lot to offer whatever you’re interested in. Culture-wise, a visit to the Tanah Lot, a traditional Balinese temple located on a small, rocky island is a must see. For nature lovers, take the time to visit some of bali’s abundance of waterfalls, including Sekumpul Waterfalls on the north of the island and Tegenungan Waterfall north east of Denpasar.

Cape Town, South Africa

Visiting during the country’s Summer months, there is never a better time than to visit this great South African city. With a varied landscape offering beaches, mountains, harbours and gardens, there’s a wide array of places to explore.

For families and animal lovers, then you can marvel at the amazing Boulders Beach, home to over 3,000 penguins. If beaches aren’t your thing, then you can relax at the many open air pools across the cities’ coastline or see the city from afar by taking the cable car to the top of table mountain.

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is a city full of rich history and culture and makes the perfect hot cultural getaway for those of us seeking more than just a beach. All across the city you can take in the stunning Moorish architecture and explore the many mosques, palaces and gardens. In the Djemaa El Fna , the centre of town, you can browse and barter at the many traditional stalls and marvel at the many snake charmers in action.

Although stunning, the city centre isn’t ideal for staying with children. Instead, opt for a whole property rather than a hotel to give the kids the much-needed space to relax and play out of the bustle of the city.

Barbados, Caribbean

With calm coastlines to the west and great surf in the south, it’s the perfect getaway for whatever kind of beach-goer you are. A friendly and welcoming island, you can feel safe and free to explore all that the island has to offer. Including not neglecting the centre of the island for the coast, with its amazing sights such as plantation houses, beautiful botanic gardens and caves among the fields of sugar cane.

The best months to travel tend to be January to April, making it ideal for escaping the cold but unfortunately makes it the most expensive.

If you’re looking for something more than just a sleepy beach holiday, then Belize is the place for you. Spend your time exploring the ancient Maya pyramids and temple ruins, marvel at monkeys, and go scuba diving in the famous Belize barrier reefs. With highs of 80°F (27°C), it’s guaranteed heat with crystal clear waters to go with it.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Famous for its lush greenery and forested mountains, northern Thailand offers something quite different and untouched by tourists in comparison to its bustling cities and well-known coastlines. Chiang Mai in particular offers a unique experience with its cliff-top temples, national parks and elephant safaris.

Haiku, Hawaii

Escaping to the Hawaiian Islands this season is the definition of a tropical retreat. Known for its unspoiled white sandy beaches and laid-back lifestyle, start your Christmas day differently with a morning’s surf followed by Christmas dinner on the beach. And with temperatures around 32C, it’s a great one for guaranteed warmth when you’re wanting week long sunshine.

Sonoma Valley, California

Although Napa may be the most infamous of wine counties in California, Sonoma valley provides a great alternative to taste authentic, Californian wine whilst avoiding the crowds of tourists. Not too far from San Francisco and dotted with family-run vineyards and stunning countryside, this area is the perfect sunshine spot, even if you’re not a wine fan.
