Sure, it’s your home, so it has everything which a home has – but is there anything missing? You can see our ultimate pre-swap checklist for hosts, but what can be a great touch is creating a great welcome pack. This can be in paper form and also can include a small gift pack on your guest’s arrival. Find out what we recommend including below.

One of the main benefits of home swapping is having all the comforts of home whilst away. Unlike impersonal, cold hotel rooms – staying in someone’s home or vacation home offers a more comfortable stay with the ability to relax, cook and explore the local area.

A nice touch to add to a home swap experience is including a ‘welcome pack’ for your guests. This can include your house rules during their stay, and also a few personal touches.

The basics

A majority of property details for your home can be found in the ‘Features’ section of your property listing. You can edit, add and remove these features by heading to my homes section of your account.

Key features that can be selected include:

- Central heating
- Dishwasher
- Washing machine
- Cable TV

However, what isn’t included are some small devices (such as hair dryers and irons) and amenities (like shampoo, dishwasher tablets, soap etc). For your guests to best prepare for their home swap, it’s a good idea to include these in your home and state where guests are able to find these in your welcome pack.

Who’s staying?

Who is staying in your home also will impact the items you provide your guests. Are they a solo swapper travelling for work? An ironing board and iron are essential in this case, as well as providing hanging space for clothes.

Things to consider including:

- Iron and ironing board

- Clothes drying rack

- Clothes rack and hangers

- Multi-phone charger

- Adapter

If it’s a family, it’s worth noting whether you have games and toys for their age group, how the bedrooms are set up and whether they are child appropriate, and any special requirements for the kitchen (i.e. plastic cups and cutlery, bibs, bottles etc.)

Displaying your own children’s toys that you are happy to share with your guests is a great way of bringing the excitement of new toys to your home swap guests

Transport details

How will your guests be getting around whilst on their home swap? If they’re renting a car or swapping using your car, consider providing a printed list of parking lots nearby and if they need a parking permit.

If you are in a city and your guests are likely to use public transport, then include a public transport map with local bus times and routes.

Provide a bit of ‘luxe’

Depending on the situation and home, there’s lots of ways to create a wow factor for your guests.

Providing luxury toiletries, high quality linen and towels, other services like Spotify and Netflix.

Fresh flowers and candles can also be a nice touch and a welcome hamper with local produce can also be a great touch.

Lay out some ground rules

We always recommend creating a set of house rules and instructions to leave your guests in your home when home swapping. As a bonus, once you have confirmed your home swap you can share this with your guests via email.

We recommend typing up your house rules to send and also leaving a printed copy as part of your ‘welcome pack’ in a clear to find place i.e. the kitchen table or near the front door.

There are many things that you should include in your house rules (you can find a complete guide here) but the essentials are:

- Timings
- Off limit areas
- Smoking / Pets / Children allowed
- Cleaning procedures
