About our home

Hilgar is a fully self-contained cottage located along Ballarat's historic boulevard. Carefully renovated and designed with meticulous attention to detail, Hilgar offers you an escape from city life and provides you with your own private retreat in this famous goldfields town.
Close to the city centre, the Ballarat Gallery, Sovereign Hill and beautiful Lake Wendouree, Hilgar is an ideal getaway for families and couples but also is suitable for corporate accommodation.

Hilgar is a designer renovated weatherboard home with newly installed kitchen, bathroom and laundry. All rooms throughout the house have been freshly painted and where required, floors have been restored.
The brand-new kitchen hosts a beautiful timber bench top with white high-gloss cabinetry, a new dishwasher, microwave and other appliances of convenience. A walk-in pantry is partially stocked for your use and the laundry has the necessary appliances to help make your stay relaxing.
The bathroom has a newly restored claw-foot bath with a marble bench top complete with a porcelain basin. Fresh new towels and soap are supplied, adding to the experience.
Gas ducted heating warms the entire house with an additional gas log fireplace in the living room. A relaxed sofa opposite two wing-back leather chairs offers a comfortable room in which to unwind in. A flat screen TV with built-in DVD player, books and magazines together with iPod docking facilities adds to this relaxing atmosphere.
Each of the three bedrooms has a new bed, selected with quality and comfort in mind. Fresh bed linen, pillows, blankets and cushions have been supplied and in the queen rooms, bedside tables with reading lamps have been conveniently placed. In the single bedroom, a selection of toys and books are on offer for the entertainment of children. Particular care has been taken to style each room in order to provide the complete home away from home feeling.
Outside there is a lovely quaint cottage garden to the front of the house, while to the rear, there is a large area for children to play, a cubby house, complete with slide and sand-pit and a decked area under a large tree, perfect for relaxing. A bricked courtyard, just outside the back door, offers another area in which to enjoy the garden.

More about us

  1. We're a family of four: mum, dad and two young boys. Dad is a Psychologist, Mum is an Interior Decorator. In 2013 we renovated our house Hilgar, located in the Victorian goldfields town of Ballarat. The renovation included a completely new kitchen, bathroom and laundry, painting throughout and new beds. The garden has also had extensive work done offering a lovely relaxing place to also enjoy. There is a alrge deck area, outdoor seating, cubby house & sandpit for the children and a double lock-up garage. BBQ facilities are also available.

  2. Ballarat is approximately 100km from Melbourne and it takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive from the CBD of Melbourne to Hilgar. Ballarat is a vibrant town, with beautiful architecture, galleries, museums, botanic gardens, restaurants and wonderful walking trails all within a short distance from our house. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, the beautiful spa towns are a quick 25 minutes drive away as well as other provincial historic towns such us Clunes, Creswick and Trentham. Ballarat hosts many festivals with up coming international rowing regattas, national cycling championships, begonia & beer festival and many other fun events throughtout the calendar year. Yes, it is true that Ballarat can be cold in winter. We even had snow this year. Hilgar, however, is well-equipped with central heating and an additional gas log fire to keep you extra cosy.

  3. We are looking for a house swap in January 2015 (any dates) to Southern QLD, Tasmania or Sydney
