Ballina was established in the 1840s on the northern shore of the Richmond River. Ballina is approximately 600 km from Sydney and 180km south of Brisbane. Ballina is a coastal town located in northern New South Wales, located close to the border of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD). Ballina has a population of approx. 30,000 people with the wider north coast towns and villages comprising 100,000 people.
Ballina is the more sleepy and less known cousin to the world famous tourist town of Byron Bay, Australia's most easterly point and only 20mins from our home by car. Ballina is also close to the world famous surfing village of Lennox Head (10mins) and Coolangatta in QLD (50mins).
Ballina has plenty to offer including the Richmond River, several beaches, parks, little rural villages, nature reserves, as well as a number of restaurants, bakeries and cafe's, some with beautiful river or ocean views! The hinterland also offers some culinary delights in little historical villages (well for Aust standards!) around Newrybar, Alstonville and Eltham. However if the kids only like fast food like McDonalds or KFC, etc..then Yes we have that too! Ballina has all the major Aust shopping brands located within 2 shopping centres as well as a main street with a number of more one off and unique shops. However for shoppers you really should go to one the local farmers markets or Sunday hinterland village markets, Bangalow is our favourite!. There are also some great little interesting tourist shops in the surrounding towns of Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Bangalow & Lismore.
For the family there are plenty of places to visit and things to do such as Macadamia Castle, Thursday Plantation, Ballina Water Slides, Alstonville amaze'n'place, The Farm or Cubby House, Byron Bay, Joy Flights from Ballina Airport, Swimming, Sailing, Fishing, Snorkelling, Scuba diving, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Hiking in one of several National Parks etc. If your looking for some more fun things to do then you only have to venture 1hr up the road to the theme parks on the Gold Coast such as Warner Brothers Movie World, SeaWorld, Water Slide World, Dreamworld or Outback Australia World.
How to get to Ballina!
Ballina has its own airport that is serviced on domestic flights daily (2-3 flights with Jetstar, Virgin or Rex Airlines) from Sydney (NSW), however you could also land at the international Gold Coast (1hr) or Brisbane (2hr) airports in QLD. Both airports have several daily private bus services to Ballina.
Our home was built in 2010, it is a single level home with four bedroom and swimming pool, two bathrooms (main with ensuite), open plan kitchen, dining & lounge opening out onto large deck overlooking the swimming pool. Separate TV/Media room and rumpus room that is accessed from kids bedrooms. The main living areas have tiles and each bedroom has carpet. The main open plan living area has A/C, whilst each bedroom and the rumpus room have fans. The house is very well insulated and A/C is not normally required plus if it's a hot day just jump into the pool to cool off!
The main and spare bedroom have queen beds while the kids rooms have single beds (there are trundles under each of the kids beds if required!). The day bed in the rumpus also folds out to form a double bed, so the house can accommodate 6 adults and 4 kids if required.
For the Active: We are keen bike riders so there are a number of bikes in the shed you can use. There are beautiful bike paths around Ballina that take in rural and coastal vista views. You are able to ride from our estate into the Ballina town centre. However you may have to get the kids out of the pool! we have plenty of pool games available for use.
As Ballina is a regional town public transport is not as good as the City so we are happy to negotiate the use of our car so you can visit the beautiful hinterland or drive a little further to Queensland to visit the Gold Coast (1hr), Brisbane (2hr) or Sunshine Coast (3hr). However there are plenty of hinterland towns and villages to visit closer to Ballina.
