About our home

PORT FAIRY:

Port Fairy is an iconic beach location along the Great Ocean Road. It is a popular and highly accessible town of waterfront houses and a lovely empty beach on the Shipwreck Coast. It resides on the Princes Highway, and is the last stop on the Great Ocean Road, about 20 minutes from Warrnambool or three/four hours from Melbourne.

This sizeable fishing village-cum-town of two to three thousand makes for a perfect stop-off between Adelaide and Melbourne, with its long, wide beach and abundance of water. Such is its charm, it was named the 'worlds most liveable town' in 2012.

The town is in two parts, with the main town separated from the coast by the Moyne River, where there is a delightful coastal community. Port Fairy also possesses that small town, big city feel quality owing to wide streets and extensive public services.

It boasts history, too, founded as it was by whalers in the 19th century and still featuring dozens of century-old cottages and buildings. Heritage walks are popular with some visitors, taking in these whalers' white cottages and Georgian homes—the Maritime and Shipwreck Heritage Walk is a must.

Naturally, the water and beach is a major draw and the swimming and surf here is excellent. The beach is long and in a huge arc, with some particularly good surf at the eastern end. Southern right whales can be seen from the shore and there are colonies of seals on nearby Lady Julia Percy Island. Closer at hand are Griffiths Island for its birds and the Tower Hill Reserve for koalas, roos and emus.

OUR HOME:

Featuring 3 bedrooms, our home is great for couples or a small family wishing to spend lazy days at the beach, wandering around the historic township, enjoying a coffee in Sackville Street or simply lazing in the secluded large backyard enjoying the garden, birdlife or reading a book.

Open up the house during warm summer days + feel the cool ocean breeze (please note Sommarhus has NO air conditioning but outside awnings to keep the house cool), whilst in the winter months enjoy the cosy couches and gas log fire or sit under the large sheltered back patio which is a little favorite to bask in the winter sun and enjoy lunch.

Fully self contained with carport for two cars. The kitchen has been decorated for those who love preparing good food + is well set up with good quality equipment + utensils including a coffee pod machine. The pantry contains basic ingredients + the garden is full of fresh herbs + fruit trees. There is a BBQ + bikes that you are welcome to use.

Lovely big bathroom with bath and shower (toilet is NOT separate). An additional outdoor hot + cold shower (it is very private + sheltered) is a great addition to wash away that salt + sand or to just enjoy the outdoors.

Our home is not large by today's standards (its a 1960's design) + set up for 6 people maximum (please note bedding consists of 2 x Queen + 2 x Single (one of which is a pull out trundle bed) + well behaved outdoor pets are welcome. Please note: pets are not permitted inside the house but are welcome to sleep in the attached laundry. The backyard is not lockable but we have sturdy farm gates for pets so please consider this.

We are located in a quiet area of Port Fairy, on a Norfolk Pine lined street close to the Showgrounds. We are 1.5km to East Beach (patrolled beach) and a 1.3 km (15 minutes maximum) leisurely stroll to Sackville Street (shops, cafes etc).

This is now our second home as we have moved onto land near Hamilton. We do use the house frequently and also love to share our home with like minded guests via Airbnb. We have a 5 star rating and super host status. For more information and reviews, please see our Airbnb listing (under same name).

We are happy for "Point Swaps" + interested in house swaps (both simultaneous and non) too, particularly short breaks in Victoria. We are also looking for a swap (does not need to be simultaneous) to Sydney (prefer northern beaches) late Sept 2017 and the South of France July 2018, but really are open to anything! Our house will generally not be available during peak times (as it does get booked up) but please feel free to ask even if the calendar is showing "not available" as we maybe able to accommodate.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

We also have an Instagram account where we post local happenings + highlights :) @sommarhusportfairy
