Local Attractions
Nestled on the beach in the heart of the famous Southern Vales wine region, the area offers the best of the coast and country and yet is an easy 45 minute drive from the heart of Adelaide.
This seaside haven is framed by the rolling Mt Lofty Ranges, offering sweeping vistas that are carpeted by verdant vineyards with splashes of olive groves.
With its protective reef shelf to the south and a broad bay on Gulf St Vincent, the area was once all about sailing ships but is now all sea change and holiday houses high on the limestone cliffs.
A variety of beach experiences are on your doorstep from the sheltered cove and surfing breaks of Port Willunga, the family friendly drive-on stretch of golden sand from Aldinga Beach to Sellicks, the fishing and divers delight of the reef, or the nudist beach at nearby Maslins.
While the green and blue gulf waters below the cliffs mean lazy days on the beach for most, the area is also a focus for diving with a unique Aquatic Reserve established in the waters off the beach to protect a rare reef formation.
This quaint village of Port Willunga is also a stones throw from the multitude of award winning wineries and renowned restaurants (Star of Greece, the new Cube at D’arenberg, Saltbush, Russell's, The Victory Hotel, The Salopian Inn and The Barn among many others) coffee shops, organic produce, farmers markets, bakeries, galleries and antique shops that permeate the nearby Southern Vales.
As South Australia's best kept secret, the area offers the best of summer family holidays, winter getaways with wine tasting beside crackling fires, golfing, or even hang-gliding or flying for the more adventurous.
Once you have visited the fabulous Fleurieu Peninsula you'll just keep coming back!
I have been married to Kym since 1996 and live together with our teenage son, Jameson, two Labradoodles and two Persian cats.
We grow some grapes, a few black Angus cattle and our own vegetables on our property in the beautiful Adelaide Hills in South Australia.
My work is predominantly managing our beach holiday rental houses, located on the gorgeous Fleurieu Peninsula, about an hours drive from our home.
I am passionate about gardening and travel, both of which I have been lucky enough to indulge in. We regularly trip to Europe and always include time in the United Kingdom, France and Italy, usually sightseeing by bicycle. We have also enjoyed exploring many regions in Asia.
My preference is to be outdoors, and I enjoy cycling, kayaking, hiking and paddle boarding (not very well!).
I'm more fun than that....
I adore spending time with friends and family at home, or passing an afternoon at one of the many wineries in our local area. Catching up for a coffee, breakfast out on Saturday mornings after gym, a movie and dinner, or the beach - always on the radar!
Port Willunga is one of the most popular and most spectacular beaches in South Australia (and one of the most photographed). Its soft sandy beach is overlooked by cliffs where fishermen once carved out caves to store their boats and nets, which are now greatly valued as a pleasant family haven and shade from the scorching summer sun. These days the closest some people get to the local squid and garfish is in the popular Star of Greece restaurant overlooking the beach.
The rotting timbers of the remains of the Star of Greece, a three masted, iron cargo ship, wrecked here in 1888, provide a poignant reminder of the storms that can sometimes disturb this normally placid coastline.
Port Willunga is only 45 kilometres from Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.
