Firetail Bush Retreat is a fully self-contained cottage including a large lounge and bedroom which gets the morning sun (overlooking the surrounding hills). It has one king bed, cosy log fire, deck off the bedroom, TV and iPod dock + in-house movies, books and magazines, games, WiFi internet access and your own kitchen. We are open to simultaneous or non-simultaneous swaps any time of year. Looking to stay in the Tamar River region/Launceston on the weekend of the 1st of May 2015 and are looking for a two week escape anywhere interesting in Australia or overseas in mid July.
You have access to an outdoor jacuzzi where you can sip a glass of Tassie pinot noir, listen to the owls, watch the wildlife and count the stars. We are part of the 'Land For Wildlife' program which seeks to identify and conserve wildlife and habitat on private land, so if you chose to explore the 6 acres of bushland, you are likely to encounter plenty of Tasmanian native birds and other wildlife. 50 species of birds have been sighted on the property. The cottage is built to a traditional Aussie bush theme (stone, mud brick, tin and wood) but incorporates modern comforts and conveniences. The bathroom has a shower over the bath and a washing machine.
Golfing guests with your own clubs - there is a very well maintained and scenic (overlooking North West Bay) 18 hole golf course only 15 mins drive away - as our guests you qualify for a 20% discount on green fees - just ask us when you get here for your voucher. Yachties - the marina is not far away and temporary berthing of your own vessel is available if you choose to bring your boat.
There are several local dinner options including pub meals at the Oyster Cove Marina overlooking the beautiful D'Entrecasteaux Channel, local cafes or go to the sheep cheesery or providore and cook yourselves up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen. Alternatively it's only 10mins drive to the award winning Peppermint Bay for drinks/meals on the waterfront in nearby Woodbridge. The townships of Kingston, Cygnet and Huonville are only a short drive and there is also a local store with basic groceries and fuel at the end of our road (where you'll also find a gourmet pizza outlet and arguably Tassie's best chocolateir).
We are situated 35mins south of Hobart down the D'Entrecasteux Channel and about 2kms off the main Channel Hwy, where there is a bus stop (it is a pleasant 20-30 min walk from the house). There is plenty of parking space for your car, etc. Kettering is what you might call upmarket bush living, with a large marina down the road and is the jumping off point for gourmet and beach travelling on Bruny Island. As an extra bonus, by staying with us you qualify for a 50% discount on your Bruny Island Safari ticket when you travel as part of a couple (ie. one full paying ticket, one discounted) with pick up at your door.
As for my husband and I, we are into wildlife (of which you will see plenty bouncing around your doorstep!), motorbike touring, bushwalking, diving, food and wine and touring so feel free to ask us any questions. Damien also has a passion for cooking and loves cold-smoking Atlantic salmon and brewing beer so you're a 'bit of a foodie,' bend his ear and he might leave you something special in the fridge :-) We do have a couple of great danes which we will keep entirely separate from the cottage.
As well as having your own separate entrance (via stairs from the carpark), you are more than welcome to explore our bush block (which is steep to walk around but has great mountain views, including distant Mount Wellington). For your own safety, please keep away from the dams - they are not for swimming. You are however welcome to use the outdoor jacuzzi kept at a toasty 37 degrees C. Our own house is kept private.
For non consecutive swaps, we will be about on the property as well but can leave you entirely to your own devices if you prefer. Otherwise, we are very happy to chat and talk to you about the area, show you maps, etc (and ask lots of questions about your place!).
