Come on down!
We are a retired professional couple (publisher and writer) with two adult sons, one living in San Francisco. We have travelled all our lives and even written travel articles for national newspapers and magazines. Now that we're retired we have very few restrictions on when we can travel. We are open to both simultaneous and non-simultaneous swaps. Can negotiate a car swap if desired.
Our two-storey late-Victorian home is in Woollahra, one of Sydney's prettiest neighborhoods. It has been fully modernized by an award-winning architect.
As you walk through the house from the front door, there is a formal living room with working wood fireplace (firewood's on the porch) and a large TV with cable (FOXTEL) and Apple TV connection. The adjoining formal dining room has a 8/10-seater table. Entering the well-equipped modern stainless steel and marble gas kitchen there is a guest powder room to your left. There is a smaller dining table within the kitchen. The original kitchen fireplace with sandstone surround is a feature of this room. Steel and glass bifold doors open from the kitchen to the courtyard, pretty garden and swimming pool. This is our October to April entertaining space and has seen many a quick barbecue, long lunch and twilight dinner.
At the end of the garden is a large studio bedroom over the double garage (which also houses a toilet and shower). Also in the garage is a 8kg capacity front-loader washing machine, a large dryer, clothes line and a spare refrigerator and freezer.
Back in the main house are three large bedrooms, a family bathroom with separate bath and shower and an ensuite off the main bedroom. This main bedroom has a King-sized bed and
double-glazed French doors. One of the bedrooms is currently used as an exercise room with weights, a Fitball etc., but contains a sofa bed that's easy to assemble. We are on quite a busy local road but the double glazing in the main bedroom cuts the traffic noise to
negligible. If the noise bothers you, there are other big bedrooms to choose from! We have gas heating downstairs for the winter and reverse cycle air-conditioning in both the main house and the loft above the garage. We have Internet connection with guest access
throughout the house and in the loft.
Each TV in the house is connected to an Apple TV box. There is a good sound system that operates through the ground floor. We have back-to-base security and internet-connected cameras at the front and back of the house. Not sure why as we have never been robbed in our over 20 years here.
We are about 5kms from the CBD (a cheap Uber fare) and two minutes walk from a bus and metro-trains hub. At this hub there is every kind of shop you could want, banks, a post office etc.
A short walk away is Queen Street, a beautiful shopping street with very good cafes. A few minutes further on you are in Paddington, an historic gem filled with 1800s terrace houses, pubs and quirky shops. Down the hill is harbourside Double Bay, known for its upmarket boutiques, gorgeous waterfront park and ferry wharf. At the end of our long street is Centennial Park, a huge oasis offering everything from feeding the ducks to
riding a horse, jogging the inside track or riding a bike. Tennis courts are a five minute walk away. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia is a few minute's drive away (overseas guests are welcome) and a public golf course is a ten minute drive away. World-famous Bondi Beach is also a ten minute drive away. Harbourside beaches like Murray Rose Pool and Nielsen Park are a short distance away. We are walking distance to some great pubs and restaurants too. From our house, it's also easy to get to The Opera House, Circular Quay, The Art Gallery of New South Wales, The Royal Botanic Gardens, State Parliament House, The Mint Museum and The Conservatorium of Music, amongst many other wonderful and historic sights.
The strip of Oxford Street, from the top of Queen Street down to Glenmore Road, is retail central for original Australian high-fashion, shoes, cafes, pubs and an excellent Saturday market in the grounds of the Uniting Church, virtually opposite William Street, Paddington.
We chose this area and this house for the perfect Sydney life and it has lived up to every expectation.
We have never done a house swap before, but we have noticed others on this site have made stipulations, so here are ours: We don’t smoke and don’t allow smokers in the house. No children - sorry! No animals - sorry again. Our house is not to be used as a big party house. Respect for our (lovely) neighbours is of paramount importance to us. A car swap is negotiable.
