We are non-smokers who like to keep our house tidy and we promise to do the same with your house. The house is large, with 5 bedrooms, airy and sunny. There is a river flowing in front of the house, if you look it up on Google Earth, you will get a better idea of the great location you will be staying at. The house has a spacious garage with in it two bikes. There are excellent biking paths to Antwerp (about 25 km). If you're not into biking, the trains will take you to Antwerp or Brussels in 20 min (one train every 15 minutes), to Brugge in about one hour and count two hours for Amsterdam, London, Paris or Cologne. You can also use our car (Toyota Avensis, shift stick, seats 4 to 5) if you want to.
Dirk teaches English at a Business School in Antwerp. He loves to commute to work by bike. Dirk is also into drawing. Maria is originally from Munich. She works for a car company based in Brussels. Maria likes to play the guitar. Dirk has two kids (Teun,15 and Eva,17 years old). Eva is a good singer and likes to play the piano. Teun is more the mathematical type. He likes biking and computer games. We all like to travel in Europe and in America but have no experience swapping homes. At home we speak Dutch and German.
We live in the centre of Mechelen, in the 1500s this was the capital of the Low Countries (now the Benelux). The city has plenty of historical buildings, e.g. the palace of Charles V. 80,000 people now live in Mechelen. The city is about 25kms from these three cities: Brussels, Antwerp (Europe's second largest port, home of Rubens), Louvain (Leuven) (Belgium's oldest university town). A bit further away (about one hour by car/train) you will find Ghent, Brugge, the Flemish coast, etc. All well worth visiting. Every Saturday there is an open-air food market right across the bridge where we live.
