About our home

Our house is wonderfully located on this beautiful island, which has over 40 beaches and is famous for its water sports, hikes and sand-boarding. We are also a 10 minute drive from downtown and the picturesque 'Beira Mar'. This is a peaceful but still central area, and there are parks, excellent cafés and a number of good shops within walking distance in the popular 'Santa Monica' neighbourhood. We have lovingly renovated our home since moving in, and find it spacious and relaxing. It has 2 double bedrooms, an office/study, a large open-plan living area plus a smaller lounge, a kitchen and 2 bathrooms. Our raised terrace is a great place for BBQs or relaxing in the hammock with a good book while the sun sets on the horizon.

More about us

We are a married couple in our early 30s, Jamie is from England and Alan from Brasil. We love travelling, and actually met in Spanish school in Buenos Aires! We love our home in Florianópolis, a beautiful island in southern Brasil which is known as the 'Ilha da Magia', the island of magic. We are new to home exchange, but are experienced housesitters and understand the importance of knowing your home is in safe hands. Jamie is a freelance literary translator (German to English), while Alan runs a small tourism business conducting city and beach tours throughout the state of Santa Catarina. Our home is centrally located on the island -- known to the locals as Floripa -- and within easy reach of numerous beaches and lakes, as well as downtown.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Our house is a two minute walk from 'Mercado São Jorge', one of the most popular spots on the island; it's an organic fruit-and-vegetable market, café, restaurant, garden centre and cultural centre all-in-one. It has live music every week in the café and the best coffee on the island. There are bus stops 30 seconds from our front door, from where you can go to the lake, beach, downtown and many other places. We are in one of the island's most popular residential areas, with a real community spirit yet also more peaceful than downtown (and closer to the lake and beach!)
