We bought this beautiful old cottage, situated in a gorgeous mountain village called Beli Iskar, when it was a wreck and have loved renovating it to a very high standard, now covering 3 storeys. It was important for us to keep the rustic feel of the old cottage whilst making sure we had all the modern amenities needed for a good holiday. The lounge has a massive open wood burning fireplace powering the central heating, we kept the original doors and wooden floors, exposed some of the stonework on the inside and added a huge balcony for those balmy summer evenings. The views are simply stunning - 360 degree mountains, washed by the sound of the babbling river nearby. It has 2 modern shower rooms, separate lounge, dining room, kitchen and four double bedrooms with 2 sofa beds in the lounge if needed. The 2 loft rooms, each with a double bed, are clad in local pine and really have a log cabin feel to them. The 2 lower floor bedrooms have a stone cottage ambiance with much exposed stonework and natural tile flooring, both featuring bunk beds and sofa beds. This is a warm, cozy winter ski retreat and a fabulous summer base for hiking, swimming or just hanging out taking in the fresh mountain air and stunning views. Outside there is a reasonable sized, gated and walled garden.
Beli Iskar is 4 kms from the main ski resort of Borowitz, in the heart of the Rila Mountains. Borowitz is 10 mins drive but by 2008 new ski lifts and runs will include Beli Iskar making the cottage ski in and out. Borowitz is a quaint, atmospheric ski resort with the smell of wood buring barbecues from the small boutique style restaurants filling the air. The runs vary from challenging to nursery ideal. We as a family are all good skiers/boarders and always find the runs fun. Ski hire is cheap and plentiful. In summer this ski area becomes a hikers dream with lifts staying open and walkers rewarded with a lake, bar, cafe and hikers dorms -'untouched tourism'!
The cottage is 500 metres from the entrance to the amazing Rila National park, so picnics, walks and swimming in the beautiful river are all right on the doorstep. More serious yomping can be found a short drive away near the Rila Monastery where cute, walkers dorms are available for a couple of dollars so you can do great 2 day forees into some really serious scenery. Samokov is the nearest town (8 kms)and whilst it is very eastern block it has all the infrastructure, as well as some lovely, cheap restaurants. Theres a local market most days where you can buy local fresh produce at a fraction of the price you would get anywhere else. The Bulgarians are lovely, friendly, smiling and welcoming. Always ready to help. Our neighbours (Venti and Stephi) look after the house for us and will clean for you for a small fee.
