Our home is an older-style, two-storey house with modern upgrades including kitchen with stainless-steel appliances. Off the kitchen, is a nook with windows on three sides looking out on a deck with hottub and a large back yard. Upstairs are three bedrooms a bathroom. There is another bedroom in the recently remodelled basement which also has a bathroom with stand-alone shower. The main floor includes a formal dining room, living room with gas fireplace and a front area with skylights and upright piano. It's a comfortable home with many windows, providing good natural light.
We are Andy and Janice, a journalist and retired teacher. We have one son, who has flown the nest, all the way to London, England. Naturally enough, England figures in our travel plans for the future, which we expect will soon include more time to travel. We have had the good fortune to spend time in France, Italy and Denmark as well as England in recent years and look forward to more of the same. That's one reason we are trying home exchange as it seems to fit well into our preferred mode of visiting a new place, which is to establish a home base from which to tour an area.
We live in an established, upscale neighbourhood just west of the downtown. In fact, we are just 40 minutes by foot, 10 minutes by car and 20 minutes or so by bus or bike from the centre of the city. The area is well-treed and we are just half a block from a ravine with a paved path that leads down to the North Saskatchewan River valley, which cuts through the city from it's southwest corner to its northeast. By walking down the ravine you can be In just a few minutes in a park-setting that is more like being out in the country than in the middle of a large city. It's great for walking, running, cycling and cross-country skiing in the winter. But the neighbourhood also includes shops, good restaurants and a theatre all within easy walking distance. If you do like shopping, West Edmonton Mall, the world's largest shopping mall we're told, is just 15 minutes away by car.
And Edmonton itself is a 3 and 1/2 hour drive from the Rocky Mountains and â Jasper National Park, with Banff National Park to the south.
