About our home

Our home is in a quiet forested location on 2 hectares with trails. A private balcony off the back and a sunny terrace out the front door, lets us dine outdoors most of the year. From the terrace we glimpse the ocean and the mountains of Vancouver Island. The main living area is open and spacious. Guests have mentioned the tranquility, convenience and suitability of the 2 story layout for 2 couples or 2 families. The lower floor is like a suite. We rely on a rainwater collection and treatment system for household needs. A water conservation ethic is required by those considering an exchange. We have sufficient water for all domestic uses, but care is required during the warm, dry summer period. Guests are welcome to full use of our home including books, music and a computer work station. Visitors could "telecommute" by high speed internet and telephone. We provide an operating manual for all appliances and household systems. If any mechanical problems arise, contact and service people will be provided to assist. Guests could choose to engage house keeping services.

More about us

  1. Now retired, (Charlotte, a teacher and Tom an ecologist) we participate in the many art, environment and outdoor activities available on Gabriola. We have lived here full-time many years and this community has met all our expectations for life on an "Island in the Salish Sea". Having now refurbished our home, there are many places in the world we want to visit. We have completed a very successful exchanges to Barcelona, Montreal and Madrid. We are interested in New York,NY, the Canary Islands, Portugal ,

New York, New York is our highest priority for exchange for next spring or summer (2018). We would like to visit for several weeks or a month and we are quite flexible on exchange dates. Most tourists visit Gabriola May through October but the climate is mild year round.

Longuedoc-Russillon as well as Barcelona-Girona-Lerida area of Spain as potential destinations but are open to other locations. Charlotte and I generally traveling alone but it is nice to have space for another couple to join us.

Tom has mobility issues that need to be considered in an exchange as he can't walk up more than a couple of flight of stairs. Our home is quite but not totally handicapped accessible.

With time in advance, we can assist you through introductions, and information about your interests. A car exchange would be consideration or an exchange location with good access to local and regional transportation. We have 2 bikes, one electric assist and the other a multi-gear road/urban bike.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Gabriola is known as "the isle of the arts". Life is sophisticated and casual with cultural events throughout the year. Summers are dry and moderate because of the ocean. Spring and fall are mild. Directly adjacent to our property is Descanso Bay Regional Park. Within 10 min. we can walk to 3 good beaches for swimming,(the ocean is not warm) snorkeling and beachcombing. Our bikes (3) make for easy trips to the ferry, shops, PO, and the seasonal market. The "village centre" has good coffee shops, library, art gallery, museum and restaurants. Provincial and Regional Parks and other protected areas provide other opportunities for exploration and nature appreciation. Bald eagles, sea-birds, deer, otters, and sea lions are common. The ferry from Gabriola to the heart of old Nanaimo is 20 min. Nanaimo is an urban hub and a stop for cruise ships. Vancouver Island is a major tourist destination and whale watching, surfing, sailing, and fishing draw people to the Pacific Rim or the more protected Straight of Georgia. Gabriolans often make excursions to Nanaimo, Victoria and Vancouver for the gardens, theatre, galleries, museums, opera, etc. An economical, fast way to travel to and from Vancouver and Vancouver Int Airport (YVR) is a 25 mn. float plane flight from Silva Bay or the beautiful Nanaimo harbour front.
