About our home

My house is located in Lake Echo, Nova Scotia, Canada. The house is located on a quiet lakefront spot, where you can sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset. I have just finished renovations to the house and the kitchen is now my place of joy : ) The province of Nova Scotia offers beautiful scenery, quaint fishing villages and numerous beaches along the extensive coastline; a very beautiful province indeed! Lake Echo is a 35 minute drive to Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, where you have excellent restaurants (plenty of seafood), wonderful nightlife and lots of shopping. Enjoy an evening of pubbing with lots of live entertainment and authentic Celtic music.
Nova Scotia is home of the highest tides in the world at the Bay of Fundy (about 1 hour drive) This is a spectacular site to see and there is beautiful camping right on the cliffs of the bay. There are fabulous hiking trails and our trails are well mapped with descriptions in a local hiking guide which rates the trails from easy to difficult and tells you how long your hike should take. There is so much to see and do. Nova Scotia is very picturesque and absolutely breathtaking. I will be prepared for you after we speak, and will have brochures for things you are interested in. I've done a couple of exchanges and think it's a fantastic way to travel.
There are several things to do in Nova Scotia including museums, theater, farmers markets, strolling along the waterfront, shopping, walking the beach, hiking, whale watching, boat tours of all kinds (party boats, tug boats, sail boats…) bird watching (plenty of eagles and sea birds)….About a two hour drive from my house is an entertainment park for kids of all ages. This is a very inexpensive and fulfilling day to spend with family. (
Some other local attractions include the famous Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, the Titanic disaster burial site and many museums all a short drive from the house. Here are a few of the highlights this summer:
Nova Scotia Tattoo
Annual Sandcastle Contest, Clam Harbour Beach -
The Halifax International Busker Festival, the largest outdoor festival in Atlantic Canada, takes place form July 30 – Aug 4 - along a 1 kilometer strip on the beautiful Halifax waterfront in the downtown core. This well established 'street theatre' festival entertains up to 500,000 locals and tourists at this un-gated event. Hourly family shows start at 12 noon on six stages located throughout the Busker site, and continues non-stop at most stages until 11 pm. You will see world-class performances from acrobats, jugglers, fire artists, contortionists, musicians and much, much more. Not to be missed! Admission is free!

The Martinique Beach and Bird Sanctuary
You don't need to go to the Caribbean to discover sandy beaches. At the end of the East Petpeswick Road, visitors will be amazed to find the longest white sandy beach in Nova Scotia. Martinique Beach with its teeming wildlife has been designated a wild bird sanctuary.
Depending on the season, visitors can expect to see not just the famous Canada goose but a wide variety of birds clustered around the area on route to the southern climes. On the shore at any time of the year there aren't just birds; you may sometimes see seals playing in the waves.
An amazing number of sandpipers may lead the way along the shore to the end of the beach from where you have a great view.

I am Debbie, a project manager working in the construction industry. I work on contract and plan to be slow during summer. I have 2 grown daughters who live on their own and one of them will be accompanying me. I love the idea of a house exchange – I have done two now and both were great experiences. It seems very personal and very relaxing. I love to travel; but, I am a homebody at heart. I like the idea of having a home away from home. I will take good care of your house, care for your gardens and feed your cats if necessary. I have a dog - a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and although he is very cute, he is also a lot of work to care for. He will move in with my oldest daughter while I travel. Could we exchange cars as well? I drive a 2013 Hyundai Elantra that has Bluetooth and air conditioning.
We are interested in hearing about your place...drop us a line, we are very open to new ideas. I'm looking forward to spending time with my daughter at your place, and opening my home to you. Thanks! Debbie
