Our home is a fully renovated midcentury modern rancher. The home incorporates large floor to ceiling windows and skylights to fill all the rooms with natural light. It is quite large at 4300 sq ft and all the rooms are spacious and open. Our kitchen features granite countertops and a large pantry with sink, wine cooler and countertop appliances. The master bedroom is on the main floor and there are 2 bedrooms on the lower floor. There are also 3 single beds on the lower floor in an area adjacent to the TV room which are perfect for children. All the main levels ceilings are 12 ft or higher with exposed beams. The appliances are new and there is a 50 inch TV in both up and down sitting rooms. Full service cable TV and high speed internet are installed. Our new downstairs bathroom features a spa shower and our master suite a built in whirlpool bath. Most of the furniture is new and has been selected to match the character of the house.
We are located in a quiet cul-de-sac overlooking mountains, sea and a nature preserve. There is an extensive hillside garden at the back of the property with over 30 species of trees and many flowering plants. A 30 foot hedge separates us from our neighbors so even though we are on a residential street we are quite secluded and very quiet. At the bottom of the garden is a gate which gives access to the nature preserve for a walk to the ocean where you can see eagles, blue herons, hundreds of species of small birds and even hear the sea lions in the spring as they swim up the estuary.
We have 4 adult bicycles for use as well as assorted beach and water toys.
Parksville is a resort community midway on the east coast of Vancouver Island. The weather is very mild all year long so we enjoy cycling 12 months of the year. Since we are located near the centre of town we are within minutes of supermarkets, and the various small shops located in the town centre. This includes art galleries, British specialty shops, hardware stores, craft stores, bookstores, fresh seafood store at the Marina and some great pubs and restaurants. If we are not travelling our car sits in the driveway unused for weeks at a time.
The cul-de-sac where we live has only 6 homes, 2 are retirees and 4 homes with young families. Since there is almost no vehicle traffic the street is very quiet. There are also many family oriented events that take place nearby, especially in the summer months. On Canada Day we are two blocks from the parade route and you can watch the fireworks from our balcony overlooking the bay. There are international kite festivals, sand sculpturing, car shows, etc. all taking place in the community park (which also has a huge playground and waterpark. We are also within walking or biking distance of 2 world class sandy beaches, one in town and one in the Provincial Park next to us. Even in high season beach access is never a problem. When the tide is in we enjoy an evening swim while watching the sunset, visiting with a sea lion or looking at the cruise ships travelling up the inside passage to Alaska. When the tide is out it is a great place for kids to wade in the sandy tide pools, build sand castles or catch tiny crabs. Paddle boarding and windsurfing are also popular with rentals on the beachfront. Within a half hour or less are 5 golf courses (open year round), 4 Provincial Parks, 2 freshwater lakes, rain forest tours, cave tours, zip lines, sea kayaking, whale watching, salmon fishing and the Harbor City of Nanaimo. Within 2 hours are Vancouver (by Ferry), Victoria and Tofino.
Our names are Marilyn and Tony, both retired, on and off since 2005. Tony is a professional engineer and after his company was purchased by a large firm in 2005 we travelled extensively across Canada and the US as well as visiting England, Greece, Spain, France, Mexico and Central America. Marilyn had a career in real estate in Sherwood Park Alberta but was happy to give up working weekends and having no holidays. After retiring we both looked for a place to settle in Alberta but one too many winters at 30 deg below zero (even though we cross country skied in this weather) convinced us to look elsewhere. We relocated to Victoria, BC with the intent of buying a downtown condo but as beautiful as Victoria is we were looking for a much more peaceful location.
We moved to the Sunset House in Parksville in 2010 and spent the next year completely renovating every room. Now that we are done we want to enjoy some more travelling both around Vancouver Island and around the world. Although we used to enjoy “adventure” travel (cycling tours, canoe camping, etc.) we now prefer more comfortable surroundings.
We have four children, 3 in Alberta and one living in Vancouver, and 4 grandchildren with another on the way.
A quote from our guests during our last home exchange:
"Just a note to say thanks for the terrific home exchange in June. Your house was wonderful, and your area has so much to see and do.
We had a great time there, and then came home to a spotless house.
