About our home

Our elegant heritage house was built in 1929 and renovated 7 years ago. It overlooks Spanish Banks, Vancouver's longest and loveliest beach, with views across the harbour to the mountains beyond (snowclad in winter). The house is on three floors. The main floor has one bedroom, a dining room, a living room with a gas fireplace and the kitchen, with modern appliances and a central island with bar stools. The living room has lovely views of the harbour, as does the front porch, which gives onto a roomy and mature front garden. At the back is a sun-drenched deck with a bbq and a smaller, tiled garden space. Upstairs are two bedrooms, the front one with the best views of all. The downstairs is completely renovated and surprisingly roomy, with a large, booklined TV room, another bedroom, an office and a laundry. There is one bathroom on each floor.

The house is a classic Vancouver heritage, with parquet wooden floors, elegant tilework and much local wood. It is both cosy and roomy; the three floors are separate spaces and feel worlds apart. We are happy to swap cars, and have a garage and ample street parking.

More about us

  1. We are a professional couple, both in the book business, with two children aged five and eight. We travel regularly and spend a few weeks each year in the UK, France and Italy, but we are open to proposals, especially in the winter.

Nous parlons bien le français - j'ai vécu six ans en France et nous retournons régulièrement. Faites-nous une proposition!

Neighbourhood

The house is in the heart of one of Vancouver's nicest neighbourhoods, West Point Grey, a five-minute walk from a shopping area (10th Avenue) with banks, boutiques, bakeries, a supermarket, food stores and cafes. Spanish Banks beach is a five-minute walk the other way, down the hill; it is two kilometres long with lots of sand and stunning views to the Coast Mountains and downtown. By car you are 10 minutes from downtown shopping and world-class restaurants, another 15 minutes to hiking or skiing at Grouse, Seymour or Cypress Mountains, all three over 1,000 metres high; the lights of these resorts can be seen twinkling from the front windows at night.

West Point Grey is one of Vancouver's oldest and most genteel neighbourhoods, with many elegant wooden homes from the 1910s and 1920s, most now renovated. It is urban, but still has some of its original bohemian atmosphere, especially as it is close to the prestigious University of British Columbia (UBC), easily reached by bike, bus or car. Between us and UBC is Pacific Spirit Park, a huge forested area popular with walkers a short stroll west of the house.

Vancouver has a mild climate, with little or no snow in winter and long, warm summers. The sea, forest and mountains are never far away.
