About our home

Our gorgeous open-concept, all-wood, 3-bedroom/2-bath home overlooks a beautiful tropical garden and is about 50 meters from the Caribbean Ocean.

When you are not out and about, exploring all that this area of Costa Rica has to offer (jungle-hiking, snorkeling, beautiful beaches, amazing restaurants, surf lessons, yoga, zip-lining, kayaking, animal rescues, and more...), you will enjoy relaxing in our open-air living room/dining room. (Warning: the sounds of the ocean and the soft magnetic sand are addictive!).

We are located in the quiet area of Playa Negra...an easy (20-minute by beach) walk to the funky, authentic town of Puerto Viejo (by car, we are 5-minutes away).

In addition to this 3-bedroom home, we have (2) ocean-view 1-bedroom cottages on the property and (1) 1-bedroom garden-view cottage. We are open to swaps for the house, a cottage, or the entire property (makes for an amazing spot for a family reunion, friends-getaway, etc).

We have all 5-star reviews on airbnb, tripadvisor, etc - we promise - you will not be disappointed!

More about us

  1. We are a family of 4 - 2 parents, and 2 teens (a 15 year old girl, and a 17 year old boy), and a dog (but he doesn't generally travel with us unless we are staying close by). We live in Washington, DC.

  2. Our son plays Ultimate Frisbee, loves music, and is insanely neat and organized.
Our daughter is an all-around athlete - she used to be a competitive cyclist and now plays field hockey and is taking up boxing; she loves to travel and is an adventurous eater.

  3. David owns his own marketing company and is kind of a tech-geek ;)
Karen doesn't understand anything tech-related and tends toward being a people-person, working with women around personal growth, empowerment, etc.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

We are on the quiet beach of Playa Negra, about a mile from the funky, fun town of Puerto Viejo. Puerto Viejo has a different vibe than the rest of Costa Rica, as it very integrated and diverse, which makes it a bit more "bohemian" and less touristy.
There is so much to do in this area: in addition to just relaxing to the sound of the ocean at the Villas or at our (practically private) beach, we love to: ride bikes along the coast, stopping at different beaches along the way; explore how chocolate is made by local indigenous people; hike through the jungles of Manzanillo or Cahuita; snorkel or kayak or paddle-board (tons of wild animals to see); bring guests to the awesome Jaguar Rescue Center, head to the beautiful waterfalls, and so on.......
There are many delicious restaurants in town, from Italian to Caribbean-style to Argentinian and more...Plus amazing fresh local fruits, coconuts, and more are super-easy to come by.

We fell in-love with this area on our first visit, and love to share it with others.
