About our home

Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal. Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee on our enormous 25 sq. m. covered deck. At night, watch the volcano or count the stars overhead. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!
We feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.
Book Local Tours and Attractions: Tomas and Hannah, owners of La Gavilana (www.facebook.com/lagavilanaherbsandart), our on-site hosts can now book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zip-line tours, hot springs, spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm or a two day hike through pristine rainforest, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask Tomas when you arrive and he'll be happy to make recommendations and reservations for you.

More about us

  1. We are a married gay couple (Joe and Wesley) who retired in 2012. After visiting Wesley's hometown of Hannibal Missouri, we fell in love with the area and the people and tackled our first project in 2013-starting a professional theater. As lovers of art, literature, architecture and history, we found Hannibal oozes culture. We started the theater to support our booming tourism base and now produce five plays a year from March through August. Then we started buying old distressed properties and have completed four major renovation/restoration projects in the historic downtown. Although we didn't get to travel as much during five years of hard work building up our businesses here, we are starting to dream of escaping again. We love places where we can integrate into the community, live the local life, relax, read, drink wine and commune with the atmosphere, whether urban or rural.

  2. Joe spent 40 years as a media executive in Canada, managing newspapers and magazines in 17 communities and playing a leadership role in community development. Wesley, an American, grew up in Hannibal, built his career as a senior project manager (IT) in Atlanta and Northern Virginia before retiring at 40 to move to Canada. We are well-travelled and own properties in the US and Costa Rica. We were members of Home for Exchange for several years prior to 2012 and exchanged with France, England and Ireland, but dropped out when we made this major commitment to Hannibal. Now, it's time to start travelling again, at least on a limited basis.

  3. We're pretty laid back. Joe speaks fluent English and passable French, Spanish and German, so we're not afraid to travel in countries where English is not the first language. We love animals, so don't mind babysitting your pets if needed. We're not party-people, like to go to bed early, but like to meet new friends wherever we go and fit in pretty well to any new experience. We're also not very picky about where we stay, so don't be afraid to surprise us. As long as your home is clean and comfortable, the size, type, décor are not an issue with us. In-town, in the country- isolated or at the center of it all- as long as the community interests us, we can make just about anywhere home. We should mention that we have many residential properties offered on Air BnB and Home Away in Hannibal. We chose this property to feature because of it's great location and finishes, but if your group is smaller or larger, ask about alternative properties.
