About our home

This is an efficiency apartment in a new home located in a very small, rural subdivision, six miles from the agricultural center of San Ramon de Alajuela. We are located 45 minutes and half a century from San Jose, the capital of the country. If you are looking for a tranquil setting with gorgeous sunsets and temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees fahrenheit, you can't do better than here. You also can't ask for a more central location from which to take day or two day trips to visit all the attractions Costa Rica offers. We are within 45 minutes of the Juan Santa Maria International airport in San Jose, an hour from the Pacific beaches, and within a two hour drive of the rain forests and cloud forests that make Costa Rica famous. You can reach any point in Costa Rica in a day's drive, and many of the tourist attractions are only a day-trip away. Although we offer the use of a vehicle, it's for local use only--trips to San Ramon for groceries or dining. If you want to explore Costa Rica, we highly recommend renting a four-wheel drive vehicle.

More about us

  1. My wife and I retired to Costa Rica from the States in 2011. We grew up together in a small town in the Midwest, went to college together, joined the US Army together, and both retired as full colonels. My wife holds two master degrees and I hold two doctorates. We moved to Costa Rica to a large extent because of the climate. 60-80 degrees n Costa Rica beats -25 in the winter to 100 degrees in the summer in NW Illinois. My interests are music and theater, my wife's interests are landscaping and gardening. Our property reflects all of these interests.

Where is it?

El Empalme is a very small town of about 100 people. Jardin La Torre is five minutes outside of Empalme. When we write about our rural location, we're talking about waking up with the chickens, watching one of the local farmers walk his cows down the road to pasture at 5:30 AM, and returning with them at 5 PM. Although San Ramon is over 20,000 population and only a 15 minute drive, it offers little night life or tourist appeal. Restaurants, although plentiful, offer little in upscale dining.

Jardin La Torre (Tower Garden)is a very small commune comprised of three houses, one of which contains the apartment. A club house and additional apartment are under construction. The upper half of the property is pure natural Costa Rica, gardens with winding rock paths bordering on the Cloud Forest, with native flora including cacti, agave, bananas, guavas, mangos, heliconia, bromeliads, ginger, philodendron, coleus, and many other varietals. Although you'll be staying in an extremely modern residence, you will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.
