Looking for the perfect place to rent for your French holiday next year? Somewhere as comfortable, lovely, well equipped and welcoming, as your own home ?
La Grange may well be your answer!
It is not so much that it is an architect designed and rather clever conversion of an old stone barn, conveniently close to Cherbourg in Normandy. Nor that it is utterly peaceful and surrounded by fields, yet only a 5 minute bike ride from a string of sandy beaches and Barfleur, one of the prettiest little fishing ports in France.
Not even that it sleeps 12+ (with 4 double bedrooms, all with new mattresses, for 8 grown-ups, a bunk-bed room with four 3’ beds for four younger people, and 2 cots and high chairs (so you don’t have to bring them) for the very young. Nor because there are 4 bathrooms ( 2 with baths, both with underfloor heating, and 2 with showers )so no queuing.
No!
You will feel so instantly at home at La Grange because everything that you have at home, if not more, is there, and of the same high standard. There is original artwork on the walls throughout the house, and Persian rugs on many of the floors. The oil-fired central heating keeps it warm and cosy in winter, while the thick walls make it cool in summer. The 12 seater dining table can be set with tablecloths, napkins, candlelabra , elegant cutlery and glassware, if you want to be really smart. The three sofas around the log burner, the logs come free) are ultra-comfortable, and the Marantz sound system ,with Bluetooth, is brilliant (and there are 100s of CD , from opera to jazz to pop, to play on it ) and the sound goes out to speakers on the terrace, if required. There is a separate room for the big Smart TV, receiving all UK TV and hundreds of other channels via satellite, plus Netflix and YouTube via the internet. There is a DVD player, (with 100s of DVDs from classics to recent releases to play ), and an Xbox for younger guests.. There are literally hundreds of books throughout the house,of every sort and kind (so no real need to bring holiday reading!). There are tennis racquets, golf clubs, jigsaw puzzles, Monopoly, Scrabble, a card table and a chess table too. There is also free and ultrafast internet, internet radio, and a landline ( with phones upstairs and downstairs )for making restaurant reservations, or just phoning home.
Outside there is ample scope for outdoor living on the terraces near the house, and at the top of the safe and secluded garden there is a summer house for balmy summer evenings ,with a BBQ and firepit.. and an all-weather table tennis table . There are 12 bikes( including 2 electric bikes )all free for you to use ; and parking for 4 cars .
La Grange is well served by Brittany Ferries with year round ferries to Cherbourg (30 mins away)and Caen ( 75 mins away) from Portsmouth and Poole. Utah Beach is 30mins away, Bayeux is an hour, and Mont St Michel an easy day trip ,being 90 mins by car
Try us out? We have owned and shared this lovely and much loved house with friends for over 30 years . We all adore it .. and so might you!
We're an English couple with a great interest in the arts; opera, theatre, politics and cultural events. We feel we would absorb more of the culture of the places we visit by staying in someone's home rather than in impersonal hotels .. however delightful!
