About our home

The whole neighbourhood has a unique history as all the houses on the street were built in the 1930s as part of a housing project for then employees of the nearby train station.
Many of thoses houses have been tastefully renovated and Montjay - the name of the neighbourhood- is now a much desired part of Chambéry. It only takes 5 minutes walking to get to the city center and numerous walks can be taken starting from our house.

There are two and a half floors in our house: there has been major renovation work on our house as well and we are now very proud of our open plan kitchen on the first floor along with a cosy living-room/sitting room with a floor to ceiling bookshelf filled with English and French books. There is also a study which serves as a guest room when we have visitors. By the study is a toilet with sink.
On the top floor you will find three bedrooms of a more than reasonable size if you consider the French standards (!)- one with a double bed, one with two singles and the third one with two single beds and an additional mattress. Our bathroom was entirely redesigned in 2015 with a shower and bathtub and a double basin. There is a toilet on that floor too.

There is also a fully equipped "basement" with a garage, a ski-room, a living-room and a room with a washing-machine, a drier and an additional shower and basin.

All around the house is a 500 sq meter garden with roses and fruit trees which bring a lot of shade during the summer. The Blue Cedar is our most visible piece though - it is used as a christmas tree in the winter and as a wonderful parasol in the summer.

Finally our kitchen opens onto a wonderful terrace from which you can see the mountains ... while you enjoy a glass of wine and eat typical Savoie cheese! There is a gas BBQ for your use as well.

Our house is within walking distance of everything the town has to offer (food markets, bakeries, farmers markets, the Savoie Castle and the Cathedral, streets lined with shops, bars and restaurants, museums) or you may use our bikes for a nice workout on the bike lanes that run all around Chambéry.

We have bikes for your use, camping gear and we are always open to exchaning cars for the length of your stay.

More about us

  1. I am Floriane,43, an English teacher, my husband Benoit,43, is a lawyer and we have three kids aged 11, 8 and 5.

In 2010, we stayed in Richmond, VA for a year where we "traded lives" with an American teacher and her husband: we exchanged our homes, cars and jobs - an amazing experience. We truly felt that we understood a lot more about the culture by living in a real American home.

We have been exchanging our home every summer ever since. We have had 5 great exchanges so far with people from California, Georgia, Ireland and Australia.
Everytime it was a definite plus to our travelling experience: the best being to keep in touch and share anecdotes about each other's country.

We are now fully convinced that this type of holiday is so much better than the best hotel room! We are looking forward to doing it again and again in the coming years.

For this coming summer - August 2018- we have already agreed to an exchange with a family from the UK but our house is still available for about 8 days Aug 13-Aug 21st where we will be in Sicily ... Anyone interested (Sicilian or other!) please contact us - we want to be rated "super fast responders"!!

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Chambéry, capital of Savoie, has a lot to offer in terms of museums, restaurants, night-life. A middle-sized town of about 100000 inhabitants, it has two markets per week, excellent shopping and three cinemas that you can walk to from our house.

You will love the Italian atmosphere of its "pedestrian centre" (it used to be Italian until about 150 years ago) and you will also marvel at the surrounding villages in the mountains about 25 min drive away!

We are very lucky to live right across the public "outdoor" swimming pool and there are two big parks about 5 minutes drive from our place.

Savoie and neighbouring Haute Savoie are best known for their impressive mountains (le Mont Blanc - and its cablecar for all ages!) and their miles of hiking trails, and also for their lakes (lac d'Annecy, lac du Bourget et lac d'Aiguebelette...) where you can swim and cool down after a good day's hike.

If you're more into towns and culture, go to beautiful Annecy and Chamonix or head to Lyon, France's 2nd biggest city (1hr drive) or Grenoble (45 min drive). Finally, Savoie is very close to Switzerland - with Geneva only 45 min away) and Italy- Torino is 2hours away.
Public transportation is really good in France and usually saves a lot of trouble (no need to stress over parking!): trains will take you just about anywhere, including all European countries.
