About our home

?La Chaumiere' is a beautiful traditional alpine chalet. Built in c1890 originally as a farmhouse it was opened as the second hotel in Chatel in 1936. It was renovated and restored in 2007 and operates as a luxury ski lodge in the winter months (see my Homepage). The building is a total of 800 sq m over 5 floors and comprises of the main body of the chalet and two separate self contained apartments. The main body of the chalet has 5 large bedrooms all with ensuites, a slightly smaller 6th room which is used as an office, a formal dining room, a TV lounge and a separate lounge with fire. There is a large kitchen, also with dining area, and a large stockroom/larder. There is an indoor sauna and an outdoor hot tub. The kitchen doors fold right back to open out on to the deck area and side lawn with kitchen garden and trampoline. The uppermost floor of the chalet was originally a hayloft but was converted to a stylish 3 bedroom apartment in 2006. It has an open plan kitchen/living/diner and a bathroom with shower, toilet and separate bath. In addition there are balconies at the front and back of the apartment which provide wonderful views. This is where we live during the winter when the chalet is operational as a ski lodge. It is accessed through the main part of the chalet. In addition there is a staff apartment on the basement level of the chalet. It is completely separate with its own access. Outdoors there is a hot tub, trampoline, kitchen garden.

More about us

  1. We, (Nick (39) and Kate (37)) have two young sons (Archie 3yrs and Max 5 months). Nick has been running the ski business for 16 years and is originally from England. Kate is a New Zealander who has been living in Europe since 1994 and works as a researcher for a London based headhunting firm. Kate's parents moved from Taranaki to Hawke's Bay in her first year of university and currently live in Taradale. Since having our children we are keen to get a taste for what it might be like to live in Hawke's Bay in the future and have decided to spend a 5-6 month period in the area. We are keen to find a home with plenty of space both indoor and out, ideally with a swimming pool so that we can fully enjoy a Hawke's Bay summer! We are both keen on the outdoors and our interests include mountain biking, hiking and boating. We also enjoy travel, reading, cooking and generally just being with our sons. We are extremely responsible and would treat your home as we would our own.

Where is it?

Chatel is a charming Savoyarde farming village nestled on the French/Swiss border and is also a popular ski resort. It has a year-round population of c2500 which swells to c20,000 in the busy ski months. It is part of the world famous Portes du Soleil ski area which provides over 650km of linked pistes spanning France and Switzerland. Chatel is the perfect place from which to explore Europe. It is 30 minutes from the world famous spa town of Evian on the shores of Lake Geneva; 45 minutes from Montreux which is famous for its jazz festival; 1 hour from the beautiful town of Lausanne and 1hr 20mn from Geneva with its international airport from where several low-cost airlines operate direct flights to the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey and Scandinavia. We are 1 hour's drive to Chamonix; a 6 hour train journey to Venice and a 3 hour drive to the Italian Lakes of Maggiore and Como. We are a 6 hour drive to the French and Italian Riverias. In short, it is extremely easy to explore Europe from where we live, either by car, train or plane. There is a fairly large number of expats in the village but there is also plenty of opportunity to mix properly with the locals who seem particularly welcoming to New Zealanders! Chatel has some wonderful restaurants, both in the village and on the mountain. There is a large supermarket and two smaller supermarkets as well a traditional French outdoor market every Wednesday. There are all the normal facilities such as a pharmacy, medical center.
