About our home

La Cretouffiere is an ancient hamlet of mainly 17th century buildings in stone & slate, all thoroughly modernised & with three houses of varying sizes & specifications to suit most tastes. Consisting of La Ferme, a grand traditional farmhouse of 3 storeys, Maison Kayte, a unique barn conversion, loaded with fascinating artistic & architectural features including stained glass, mosaics & fretwork & Maison Clement, a compact little farmhouse, simple & basic & easy to keep warm. All have 3 bedrooms, la Ferme & Kayte have a shower room & bathroom, whereas Clement has only a shower room. All have English satellite TV.
The grounds of around 3000m2 contain many trees & private spaces & an unheated swimming pool which may be used from June until the middle of July

More about us

  1. Andrea & I (Chris that is) came here 15 years ago from Gloucestershire to escape from a relatively suburban existence & are both now retired although we let our houses in the summer. The single-handed restoration of this hamlet has been my obsession (the French would say passion) & watching others enjoy it has justified the effort. While we are not active environmentalists we have needed to be inventive & resourceful to survive & our emotional connection to this place is strong. It is truly our home.

Andrea's passion has been cats (we are seldom without) & the wildlife. She also likes to cook & enjoys the administrative side of the business
We both like to share what we have done here & would like to travel a bit more outside France.

Where is it?

The Department of Mayenne is rich, gently rolling countryside with the river which gives the department its name flowing from north to south to join the Loire at Angers. The largest towns, Mayenne, Laval & Chateau Gontier lie on the river & the largest hills are to our east, where they rise to 1400 feet. It is characterized by medieval stone castles, at Lassay, Domfront & over the Breton border at Fougeres, while Europe's most spectacular fortification, Le Mont St.Michel, is an hour by car to the north west. For connoisseurs of the prehistoric close by are many Dolmens indicating settlement for around 5000 years. Personally I love to pedal the lanes in peace & solitude on a sunny day & keep a stable of bikes for that purpose.
