About our home

Our house is south facing on an escarpment which runs East-West with views across farmland and was built at the end of the 18th century and appears on town maps around the date of the French Revolution. We have undertaken extensive modernisation and additions, whilst dealing sympathetically with the original features. Most of the internal features and fittings are custom built as is the kitchen with its granite worktops.

We have a fairly large private garden with cherry and fig trees, a small open fronted wooden garden house at the top of a hill giving beautiful views over the surrounding country side, an abri (covered barbecue area) and a wooden deck for outdoor eating. There is also a workshop and stone garden shed. On the other side of our quiet road we have a large grassed area with pear and walnut trees which back on to a small stream.

The town centre of Fontenay le Comte with its Saturday market is a 15 minute walk from our home and there are 3 supermarkets within a 5 minute drive.

More about us

  1. We are Alan and Doreen a retired couple from the UK with adult children living in England, Florida and Sydney. We moved to France in 2002 and spent our first 2 years renovating our house and bringing some order to a very neglected garden. We have enjoyed exploring most of this beautiful country and enjoy searching out new vineyards in addition to our favourite haunts on the Loire, in Burgundy and Bordeaux. We drive to southern Spain for 6 weeks each January/February when our weather is coldest and endeavour to take a different route each time so that we may visit small villages away from the normal tourist routes and sample the `real` Spain.

Having visited Australia several times we are particularly interested in spending 4/6 months on/near the coast 1 to 2hrs north or south of Sydney. Our dates are flexible between April and October.

A car would be at your disposal here and we would hope that this could be reciprocated. This is our first exchange and we look forward to sharing more information with you if you are interested in visiting this part of the world.

Where is it?

The Roman town of Fontenay le Comte is situated on the banks of the gently flowing Vendee River and the town centre is a conservation area with many beautiful old buildings. There are interesting walks nearby and small towns and villages to visit by car. The area is rich in history and La Rochelle, and the Green Venice are 40 minutes away with the beautiful city of Nantes with its wonderful shops and restaurants a 1 hr. drive. There are inexpensive flights to UK, Ireland, Spain and Italy from the nearby airports at La Rochelle or Poitiers and Paris is only 2.5 hrs by TGV from Niort, a lovely old town 25 mins distance by car.

Isle de Re, a favourite holiday destination for Parisiens in the summer, is well worth a visit as is Bordeaux famous for its vineyards on the banks of the Gironde.
