About our home

Our home is a distinctive and very comfortable converted farmhouse/barn built in the 1800's in the typical Jura-style with additional outbuildings one of which can also be extended to pleasant living quarters with its own bathroom. Originally converted in the 1970's our home has been refurbished and redecorated extensively in the last 5 years. It has terracotta flooring and large rugs on the ground floor and all the upstairs areas have wooden floors, very high ceilings and open beams. The house features a special Jura 'smoking' chimney -now converted into a suspended fireplace which hangs over 30 feet from the ceiling. The home and kitchen are very well equipped. The home is set in a large flat (3,000m + squared) grassy garden with mature trees and an apple orchard. The garden is fantastic for children - as well as for eating outside in the shade of the wisteria gazebo (between end April and end September) - and the house is situated up a rough but drivable track in the middle of fields, over a hundred meters away from a very quiet road. There are no immediate neighbours and no nearby traffic. The house has a strong sense of calm as well as an immediate openness to the countryside and mountains. There are extensive views of the Jura and the Alps from most parts of the house and garden, and the Jura National Park border is within a few hundred metres of the house. In winter it's possible to alpine ski, snowboard or cross-country ski within 20 mins of the house in the Jura.

More about us

  1. We are an English family with three active and sporty boys of 11, 9 and 6 years old. The boys go to the local schools and are bi-lingual as we have been living here for over 5 years. Peter works part-time from home and is the founding director of a corporate television company which is headquartered in the UK. Sian manages the boys and all aspects of family life. We are a very social family and have a large network of good friends in the local town and the Geneva region. We run, ski, sail and enjoy good food, fresh air and of course the local wine.

Where is it?

The house is situated just 1km from the small town of Gex off a very quiet road literally in the middle of a field. The countryside is open, arable and pasture with extensive views of over 75 miles on a clear day across the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. It's easy to walk to the town via the road or a rough track through the fields. There is a hill on the way back which our 70 year old+ parents manage. The town has a population of about 10,000 people and retains its own French small-town identity - with an excellent local market every Saturday in the heart of the town, several restaurants and bars, a good range of everyday shops (bakers, butcher, newsagent, drycleaners erc..) and even a small cinema. The house makes a great base for exploring this whole eastern edge of France and the French part of Switzerland and has everything to offer from extensive Jura walks (out the back door) to some of the world's best hiking in the Alps (1h 15min),lake swimming and sailing (15mins, Lake Geneva), wine-tasting, Geneva museums, restaurants, shopping and old town, (20 mins), and a wide range of activities for kids to seniors. It's a safe and beautiful area with a high-standard of living set in a dramatic landscape of mountains, vineyards and lakes. Stimulating to all kinds of people. It's a welcoming outdoor, family-kind of place but would suit anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the scenery and surroundings from the base of a peaceful, large, original comfortable Jura home.
