About our home

Welcome to our huge 75m2 apartment in the historic port of Nice. It's south-facing, quiet and beautiful, yet minutes from the beach, Old Town, tram, airport bus and train. We are freelance travel journalists which is why we swap or rent our cosy home. Our top floor apartment has a lovely lived-in feel; it has our art on the wall, our music on the iPod dock, a divine wooden bed with fine linen and a vast library of books on the bookshelf. Heating in January and February comes courtesy of a large fireplace. The apartment dates from the 1880s (the original floor tiles remain) and is very charming. There are two big bedrooms; the first is really romantic and has a tempurpedic mattress, antique lights and four metre high ceilings. The second we currently have as a study complete with ADSL WiFi access, guidebooks, history books and a small DVD collection. There is a comfortable electric inflatable bed in there too. The living room opens on to the fantastically well equipped kitchen (we do a lot of cooking!) replete with marble chopping areas, gas stove, oils and spices. We have a 1930s wooden table for eight, Roche Bobois sofa and fireplace.

More about us

  1. We are Kathryn and Tristan, two travel journalists in our 30s. We write guidebooks for Thomas Cook and Rough Guides, and articles for Time Out, Vogue etc... We love our charming home with it's collection of books, huge dining table and cosy location in the Port, but we are often not there! You can see some more photos of our place at the Homepage. We love exploring and between us have been to around 60 countries. We prefer cities and if we had a choice we'd love to see more of Paris, Istanbul, Brastislava, Porto, Cairo and Stockholm...but we are happy to go anywhere, especially if it involves lots of train travel which we love! We are very easy going and very respectful too - like most of the people on this website we would treat the belongings of others as we would our own. We love reading, shopping, hitting museums, eating and drinking. Please get in touch with us - we have no children (yet!) so are very flexible, and we are happy to swap our place in Nice for almost anywhere that we can write from if it has hi-speed internet. We are not planning any US or Australasia trips in 2008, but Europe, Asia and S America we're wide open for a week, a month or whatever! Please email us!

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

We are so well located right in Nice's historic port and antiques area, with the Old Town, long public beach and market minutes away. The port is so charming, as is most of Nice. It's quite an affluent area, but also eccentric as you'd expect from a place with 300 days of sun a year with pavement cafes, fishing boats and very cool restaurants. A tram connects all of Nice 100m away from our tranquil apartment. The airport is 20 minutes away by bus, and you can fly there from anywhere! It really is so easy. From the train station (5 mins on the tram) or bus station (3 mins walk) you can zip to Monaco, Cannes, Antibes etc... or into the hills and mountains for walking and skiing. Or walk along Nice's promenade or hit its small secluded beaches. As it's the South of France it really is unlimited, there is so much to do! As travel journalists ourselves we have thousands of guidebooks on our shelves - we've written two books about the Riviera so we could probably talk about it all night!
