“We stayed in the Gite at Collette's Chateaux, which was perfect for our needs. The Gite stayed cool in a 37 degree heatwave and the self contained accommodation with well equipped kitchen (and deckchairs under the trees) was an ideal location for us to relax despite concerns about Covid rising. The kids loved the pool, communication with Collette was fantastic before and during the trip, and we loved exploring the area. Highlights of the trip were the velo rail, horse riding and trips to the local lakes for swimming, walking, pedalos, canoeing and paddle boarding. Fantastic family holiday all round. Thanks to Colette and Patrick for their hospitality.. ”
Colette's reviewsAs a host (13)
“We were so warmly welcomed to Colette’s little cottage. Arriving with a sick little daughter, it was the perfect place to recuperate as we explored the beautiful gardens. Thank you for having us.”
“Lovely stay at a wonderful old chateau, fabulous experience. Collette and Patrick could not have been more welcoming and helpful, recommended!”
“We had an absolutely lovely 2-day family vacation at Colette and Patrick's charming French chateau. It is very comfortable for families with children. All of the guests were very friendly and our kids immediately made friends (one of whom served as a quasi-babysitter for our 2 year old!) and spent the entire time running around the estate. The aperitivo and dinner were just lovely. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return. ”
“This was a wonderful place and our hosts were delightful. We are full of admiration for their thoughtful hospitality. To be recommended from all points of view. Thank you Colette and Patrick.”
“My partner and I and our 9 year old son spent a wonderful week being hosted by Collette and Patrick at Chateau Ribagnac. Colette and Patrick could not have been more welcoming, generous with their time and perfect hosts. They informed us well on things to do locally and helped us find everything we needed. The house and grounds were idyllic. Not overly manicured and unreal, but an authentic place with interesting items they have collected. Great swimming pool. Our 9 year old son LOVED fishing for Crawfish in the pond and did not want to leave the chateau each day as he loved this activity so much. The property is close to Limoges and many beautiful historic villages. We had fun visiting a family run pottery business on a farm where our son enjoyed a lesson in spinning clay. Colette told us about a wonderful antique/junk shop in the nearest town, where we had some great finds and purchases. We arranged to eat Colette's wonderful meals on a number of the evenings, what a privilege to eat a 6 course dinner served in the chateau. Her food was excellent, she could happily open a restaurant, but being served this food, full of details about the cheeses etc to a handful of people was such a treat. We had never been to this part of France and would love to return to Chateau Ribagnac again and see more of the surrounding area. Thanks you Colette and Patrick for your kindness and hospitality! We would love to see you on your next trip to the Cape, please do get in touch. I would love to show you Lekkerwijn if you would like to see it or stay there. I had many questions about your fascinating family, but realised how generous you both were with your time and you were running a business. I stayed on in the UK for 7 years to look after a close relative, Valerie Desmore, who was mixed race and grew up in Cape Town, but moved to London in 1946 to study art, so was very interested to hear a little of your families experiences. Valeire die din 2008 and we moved to the Cape in 2010 and have bene there since.”
“We enjoyed meeting Patrick, Colette and their two younger teenage children. The Chateau looks amazing in the photos, and indeed it is a gorgeous large home. We really did not do our homework very well, as we had no idea how isolated it was. For people with a car, perhaps it is an ideal very quiet location, but, for us, it was quite difficult to get to. We met a taxi driver who agreed to a price of 50 Euro from the train station to the house, but, his meter actually went up to 78 Euro's. He was lovely and only charged us the 50 Euros. Colette, very kindly took us to Limoges the next day, so that we could get a rental car. Unfortunately, the rental cars places were closed at the weekends. Colette then kindly took us to Ambezac, to get the train the next day, so we were able to get a rental car. The view over the lake is stunning, and the Chateau very pretty from the Lake. Unfortunately, I did not see a reference to the cat on the Love Home Swap Site. I am severely allergic to cats, which meant that we could only use our bedroom, as the cat lived in the dinning room most of the time we were there. Our bedroom was very large, and quite beautiful indeed. The WIFI though it worked, was not adequate to open our emails, it only worked in the dining room, and by the front door. We had limited reception for our mobile phone. The weather was 40 degrees, we found the home to be very dark in the day time, as the curtains were all left closed to keep the heat out. There was a leak in the ceiling into the Lounge so we could not use that room while we stayed there. The breakfast consisted of yoghurt, fruit, cake, and a pastry, with juice and coffee, perfect for the start of the day. We loved the area, and when we got a rental car, we went exploring each day, and really enjoyed the area. The area has so much history, with so many interesting sites to see. Jane and Malcolm ----------------------Host's Response-------------------------- Dear Malcolm & Jane We are sorry that you didn’t enjoy your stay with us as much as you could have because you failed to organise a rental car. Our guests regularly arrive over the weekend and over sixteen years, you are the second person to have a difficulty with renting a car. Our Château is indeed in the countryside and set in our own grounds of 86 acres, but we are only 5 minutes from the nearest town and 25 minutes from the region’s capital, Limoges, so hardly “isolated”. The point of staying in a Château such as ours is to enjoy the beautiful views and nature and hear the birdsong and have clean air and space around you. We have a lovely cat, whom most of our guests adore and once we were made aware of your allergy we were scrupulous about keeping the cat out of the living room when you were there. I also have allergic asthma to cats and so the wooden floor and leather furniture and the fact that the room is vacuumed daily are precautions that avoid allergic symptoms. Unfortunately there had been a leak above the second living just before you arrived. You were however, only unable to use this room on the first day and after that the room was open and you were even invited to browse all the guides and leaflets kept there for further information on the region. I am surprised that you felt confined to only use your room. During the unprecedented heatwave, just about every property in France closed their shutters (as the government and common sense directed) so we agree the Château was dark during the heat of the day to keep it lovely and cool inside. I showed you how the shutters worked so that you could easily open them whenever you wished. The wifi was working perfectly during your stay, perhaps it is slower then you are used to, but you were able to access the internet without problem and I should point out that everyone else in the house was able to access the internet including emails, which don’t usually require any special wifi properties. Patrick also added a signal booster for you. The mobile reception was also fine, as we use almost exclusively mobile phones here; perhaps it was your provider? We’re glad you enjoyed breakfast which also included: fresh bread & croissants, petrifruit or brioche, home made cake, home made jams, fromage blanc, yogurts, melon and fruit and a selection of cereals and fruit juice, tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Finally, I would just say that a large proportion of our guests are returning guests or come to us through personal recommendations and that speaks volumes for the enjoyment people experience here. We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels. Best regards Colette”
“Colette and Patrick and their delightful children are intelligent, gentle, unassuming hosts who work hard behind the scenes to provide a relaxing and unique experience for their guests. Even if the idea of a family friendly but romantic fairytale chateau set in ancient grounds amid rolling lush countryside doesn't appeal, just go there for their food ! It's intuitive cookery, with flair and style and really is in a league of it's own. Unpretentious and excellent value for money. Their ethos of organically growing their own and buying seasonal local top quality produce from the butchers, bakers, grocers and markets in their community together with their insight into the origins and methods of production of the extensive wine list and cheese selection that they offer each evening really sets them apart. The rest of the time they also manage to achieve the perfect balance of being discreetly in the background or consistently contributing to the banter of your evening with their entertains anecdotes and excellent local knowledge. A special family offering a special experience in a special place. Don't miss it. With very best wishes Mark and Louise xxx”
“What an amazing place! It is truly a fairy-tale castle. I spent three fabulous days there with Colette and Patrick in late September, enjoying a huge bedroom with a balcony that looked out over the estate, a dressing room and a huge bathroom with a giant bathtub, incredible meals, lovely wine, great companionship. I took a tour of the place, and all the rooms seem equally appealing... spacious, comfortable and full of charm. Colette and Patrick are such warm, relaxed and welcoming hosts that I felt like one of the family. I got to pick mushrooms! I got to fetch spring water from the spring! Ask Colette about the porcelain museum... we had a very interesting tour there. Thank you so much, Colette and Patrick, Gilberto and Agnes! ”
“This place was amazing. There is so much history in this place, you can actually feel the energy. We loved the location and the originality of the place. Colette and her family was super hospitable, the food was great and there is a fantastic bakery in town. When you want to really get away, this is the place to be. Thanks. PS: Colette and family are coming to stay at our house in Costa Rica. ”
“Our holiday at Chateau Ribagnac was the best holiday of our lives so far! The setting is beautiful, Patrick, Collette and their children are lovely people, an experience we will hold in our hearts forever. Thank you so so much!! We are looking at extending our villa to make it a 4 bed (so it will sleep 8)... if you ever fancy doing a non simultaneous swap to Phuket some time, please get back in touch :-) My apologies for taking so long to write this review, our lives have stopped since we returned from France. Have a wonderful Christmas and thanks again xxx ”
“A huge thank you to Colette and Patrick and their kids Gilberto and Aigness. We all had such a wonderful stay at the Chateau and the Gite Les Rosiers and made more new friends via the awesome sharing economy and LHS. Colette and Patrick are exceptional hosts who went out of their way to make sure we were well entertained, well fed, well watered ;) and very well looked after! The Chateau is amazing, what a wonderful piece of history, thanks so much for allowing us to stay and share it with you. The surrounding areas are lovely, perfect French villages, lakes, forests and countryside all rather unexplored by many tourists and the city of Limoges is just 20 minutes away. We wish you all the very best with future swaps and thanks once again for an amazing stay. Love the Prince family. ”
“We stayed at the Chateau for one night and then in the Cedre Gite for one week in September. Our hosts Colette and Patrick were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them. The help we received from Kelly was also very welcome and made our stay very relaxing. Staying in the Chateau for the first night was just perfect and the room was beautiful, as was the scenery from the window. The grounds were lovely and peaceful with lovely little seating spots dotted here and there. From our Gite we could see the swimming pool, and had the weather been warmer we would have been tempted to take a dip. The Gite was lovely and comfortable and was very well equipped. We ate in the Chateau one evening with other guests and the food was very good indeed, as was the company. The location was perfect and peaceful but a short drive from restaurants, villages, towns and a lovely river beach. We really enjoyed our time there and would love to return sometime. Thanks for all your efforts Colette and Patrick!”
Where is it?
The Chateau is set in grounds of 86 hectares and has lovely views. We are in the countryside, but within easy reach of Limoges (25 minutes) which is famous for porcelain and has plenty of good shopping and restaurants. We are 5 minutes from the nearest small town (Ambazac) and 15 minutes from the world heritage site St Leonard de Noblat which is on the pilgrimage La route de Compostella. There are plenty of things to do and see in our area - we are happy to help you plan your days out.
You will need a car for your visit.
