About our home

Over 200 years old, this friendly stone house comprises 4 main rooms. The main double bedroom and living room/kitchen are on the ground floor, and upstairs the loft has been converted into a twin bedroom and a further living room/studio. It is furnished with a mixture of traditional farmhouse and modern furniture and is no soulless letting property but a place where I passed many very happy childhood summers, growing to know the French neighbours, their children and grandchildren.

The large garden has a view down the valley without another house in sight. It is the perfect spot for barbeques in the sunshine or for watching shooting stars on warm evenings with a glass of cognac. The valley is extremely quiet, with little more that the occasional passing tractor or the whirring of crickets to disturb the peace. In the summer, the thick stone walls and wooden shutters keep the house cool, and in spring and autumn the house is heated by wood-burning stoves. From the bathroom, you can walk straight out under the vine into the garden, to the shady bamboo terrace or to the fig tree by the pool.

More about us

  1. I am English but have spent long periods in France, most recently working as a correspondent for an international art magazine. I have just moved to The Netherlands, where I work as a curator in a contemporary art institute in Rotterdam. My partner is Dutch and is a musician and visual artist. We met in France and have travelled extensively in Europe, but are new to house swapping.

Where is it?

The cottage nestles in a little hamlet. Riberac is the nearest town, a 10-minute drive away, and is known for its weekly market selling regional produce. Throughout the summer, the town stages many concerts in its churches and main square, ranging from jazz to classical to more traditional French chanson. There are also many village fetes, usually with fantastic firework displays, the biggest being around 14th July. In Winter, the area possesses a delicate beauty and the landscape turns a subtle range of blues and greys.

The Perigord region of the Dordogne is famed for its fine foods and beautiful rolling countryside. The area around the cottage is dominated by farms and woodland, interspersed with bustling market towns and sleepy villages. Romanesque churches dot the landscape and several picturesque towns – such as Brantome and Perigueux – are a short drive away. To the east, towards Bordeaux, you will find the vineyards of St. Emilion and Pomerol. Further south are Domme, Sarlat and the pre-historic caves of Lascaux. For the energetic, there are also great climbing opportunities nearby and several places where canoes and kayaks can be hired on the Dronne River. For the less energetic, I can recommend many excellent local restaurants!
