About our home

This is our secondary home located straight at the Atlantic Seashore in South Western France. It has been a primary housing until recently. Nevertheless, it is permanently being looked after by our housekeeper. Therefore, the house does in no way come along like a typical "secondary". While we have a modern designer look in our city apartement in Cologne, we wanted to have a "regional french look" with antiques in our country home. Come in and find everywhere lots of spectacular views of the sea, expect to find antique regional furniture, family heritage and original oil paintings. There is a very special atmosphere, cooking while watching the boats out at the sea or taking your "aperitif" on the large terrace overlooking the sea, the Medoc (known for its famous wines) and the sunset in front of you. The house consists actually of two houses, one of which (an old millers house) is normally kept for other functions. The part of the house to be exchanged, which has two floors, was constructed by a well-known French writer directly on the cliff. The unusual exposition on the cliff is the reason why the house is one of the most photographed in the region from the tourist boats passing underneath but also on postcards from the town. Part of the property are also enormous open caverns underneath the house at the water. A nice cool place to sit on the water or for special dinners. The main house is suited for up to four people.

More about us

  1. We are 2. Me working in the financial industry for large institutional investors, and my partner being a bestseller's author on nutrition translated in 10 languages. We are both in our mid-fourties. We enjoy the french savoir-vivre, buying our croissants and the tarte au citron in the morning, eating in best restaurants of "La Region" and spending time at the beaches as much as our time consuming work allows. We speak English, French, Italian, German and Sign-Language.:)) The home-exchange can be managed un-simulanteously, since I live in Cologne and my partner works through the internet from France or from Cologne. Just in case you wish to visit this lively city or the Rhine valley instead, that could be another opportunity to exchange our 160m² 19century city apartement. I have been introduced to this website just recently and therefore, this is the first time we get into the idea of home-sharing. You are welcome to offer to us any place on this wonderful planet. So do not feel intimidated by the regional selection mentioned above. There is so much to see and to explore in this world, and we are very much looking forward to your offers. Cheers.

Where is it?

The house is located in a small and picturesque town at the seaside, which has kept over the centuries it's charme of a "pirate's village". Within a five minutes walk from the house you'll reach a typical French Market, where you'll find the delicacies France is known for. Next to the market is a 12th century church, small shops. In walking distance there is a big supermarket, a small harbour for fishing boats and yachts . The first beach you reach in 600 metres from the house (remember: You reside on a cliff). Our town has five beaches and further heading towards Royan the beaches become larger and larger, surrounded by pinewood-forests. The Charente Maritime is the "Old Cultural Heart of France" with every village having its romanesque church, small but impressive "chateaux" and the Medoc region with its famous wine chateaux. The city of Saintes with its Roman Amphitheatre and wonderful 1000-year-old churches, Cognac is worth a trip for its famous brandy and, of course. Bordeaux is architecturally one of the most impressive cities in Europe. It is a world heritage site and will be "European capital of Culture" in 2012. So here you'll find everything: The beaches for those looking for watersports, the ancient examples of architecture for those interested in culture and the Bordeaux wine region. Look for the Bordeaux wines at it's origin, and try them later watching magnificent sunsets on "your" terrace. The neighbourhood is excellent with villas and no apartement blocks.
