About our home

We bought this beautiful farmhouse ten years ago and our family and friends have enjoyed many wonderful times here. The house is very comfortable and the ideal place in which to relax and explore the French countryside and village life. The house comprises a large, well equipped kitchen/dining room with a traditional ?walk in' fireplace with wood burning stove. The wood is stored in the attached barn and is plentiful. A small utility room is located just off the kitchen. The central hallway leads to a large comfortable lounge with French door leading onto the front terrace. There is a downstairs shower room and toilet. Upstairs there is a lovely, bright, open reading area with original polished oak flooring. There are four comfortable bedrooms and the bathroom can be accessed from the landing or used as an accompanying en-suite to the master bedroom. The house has wooden exposed beams throughout. Outside there is a large patio which is perfect for al-fresco dining. The vines growing on the pagoda create a shaded area during the summer months. The patio overlooks a large garden with beautiful views. This is our second home. We live on the South Manchester/Cheshire border in England and our 4 bedroomed detached house could also be made available.

More about us

  1. We are Marie and Steve, a professional couple with two children. Charlotte is 16 and still at school and Daniel is 19 and is reading Modern Languages at Christ Church, Oxford. We enjoy cooking and fine dining. We are all keen skiers which was one of the reasons for buying our house in France as there are two ski resorts just about an hours drive away. Steve enjoys flying aircraft and has a commercial pilot's licence. As a family we are quite well travelled and particularly love America and the Caribbean though we are quite open minded about where we would like to go over the next few years. School holidays are the only times we can travel for the next couple of years but after that, we would love to spend months abroad. We have never looked at home swaps before and we're quite excited about the prospect.

Where is it?

The farmhouse is surrounded by rolling countryside. The views from the garden are spectacular. From the bottom of the garden you can see the Mont-Dore mountain range in the distance. The area is a renowned local beauty spot and offers unrivalled scenery. Situated less than five minutes drive from Saignes, a small, typical French market town with its several bars and shops surrounding the village square and fountain. Two small supermarkets supply most things you might need. A doctor's surgery, dental practice, pharmacy and a bank can be found in the town. The town also has its own tourist information centre, hotel/restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool complex which is supervised throughout the season. Five minutes drive from the house in a different direction is Ydes, another town similar in size to Saignes. The magnificent scenery on the short drive to the bakery in Ydes to collect the croissants and baguettes is a great way to start any morning. Ydes also offers many other amenities. For cycling and walking, the Auvergne region is probably one of the finest in France. The land contour is similar to the neighbouring Dordogne. The house is on the local 'circuit de pedestre'. As soon as you walk out of the door you have a choice of attractive routes to follow. The surrounding area is undulating, varied and full of wild life. The area remains unspoilt by tourism.
