About our home

We designed the house ourselves in 2009 to provide a great, open-plan space for enjoyable living and entertaining. Situated in a quiet and very private residential area, huge sliding windows give super light. Although 300sq metres, there are only two large, ensuite bedrooms as an upstairs area, big enough for two further bedrooms and a third bathroom, is a full-sized snooker table with bar. There is loads of space just about everywhere for a put-u-up bed. The swimming pool with Jacuzzi and sauna is indoors, opening out on to the huge patio. Gardens, front and rear, are lovely places for relaxing. We have two canaries and a dog who will be sent on holiday to relatives, two hens who will be visited daily and six fish in the outside lake (ha!ha!) who look after themselves when not stalked by herons. Super golf courses not far, we both play and our clubs are available.

More about us

  1. My wife, who is French, is a professional musician and Director of the town's School of Music, Theatre and Dance. I am English and, for my sins, was a Chartered Accountant (CPA), re-invented in retirement as an English teacher. We have enjoyed three very successful exchanges (from our previous houses) in the past, in Ireland, England and Spain.

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

St Jean d’Illac is a small, vibrant town of 7500 inhabitants, 15 kilometers from beautiful, historic Bordeaux, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Renowned Bordeaux vineyards such as St Emilion and Margaux and lovely, old villages in the Dordogne are a half hour drive away as are magnificent Atlantic beaches famous for surfing and the super towns of Andernos, Arcachon and Cap Ferret on the peaceful Bassin d'Arcachon. The Spanish Basque country and San Sebastian are within two hours, via Biarritz and the gorgeous St Jean de Luz: the pilgrimage town of Lourdes and the mighty Pyrenees a half hour longer. For the more adventurous, Perpignan, on the Mediterranean is three hours+ and Barcelona five. Please forgive us if we seem to be talking up our location but we love it!
