About our home

Our 18th century French farmhouse is at the heart of the marais Audomarois, a UNESCO-protected biosphere. For those interested in nature and exercise, there are many walks, biking trails, and excursions by boat (or kayak or canoe) into the river and wetlands. For those interested in history and culture, there is Saint Omer's beautiful 12th century Gothic cathedral and magnificent Musee Sandelin. If you want to go further afield, the Louvre-Lens is 45 minutes away; Bruges one hour and Ghent one and a half hours. And for those with kids, we have a giant trampoline, giant chess set, ping-pong table, petanque, fire pit, zipwire, badminton, swings, sandbox, bikes, waveboards and rollerblades... One watch-out for those with young kids who don't know how to swim: we do have a river near the farm; a lake nearby and the castle is surrounded by a wet moat--which are not fenced off. So... if you have young children who don't know how to swim please make sure there is a responsible adult who will be supervising them when they are outside.

More about us

  1. We are an English-American-French family who love to travel! We have 6 children ranging in age from 22 to 9.

  2. We live in the north of France in a medieval castle built in the 12th century and have recently renovated our 18th century farmhouse.

  3. We love history (Ian is an archeologist and Mary did a doctorate in history at Oxford).

Where is it?

Neighbourhood

Our 18th century French farmhouse borders the UNESCO protected biosphere, the marshlands of Saint Omer. We are next to a medieval castle and are completely geared up for families, with many activities for children: boat, kayaks, canoes to explore the river and lake; zipwire, giant trampoline, giant chess set, swings, ping-pong table, petanque, fire pit, bikes, wave boards, skateboards, etc. etc. etc. We are 10 minutes from Saint Omer with its beautiful 12th century cathedral and lovely museum, the Musee Sandelin, and we are 45 minutes from the Louvre-Lens, 1 hour from Bruges and Lille and 1.5 hours from Ghent.

Buzzy restaurants
There is a very nice restaurant a short walk from the farmhouse - the Vert Mesnil which was where Jamie Oliver trained to cook French food!
Cozy cafés
Saint Omer has many lovely cafes on their grand place
Retail therapy
CiteEurope is a 30 minute drive and one of the largest shopping malls and discount outlet locations in northern France
Bit of culture
Try the Louvre-Lens (45 mn); Bruges (1 hour) or Ghent (1.5 hrs) away. Closer to home is Saint Omer with its 12 century cathedral and Musee Sandelin.
Walks in the park
There are plenty of walks around our property and bike rides. We border on a UNESCO-protected biosphere and there is a river that runs through our property, a lake, orchards and many, many animals!!!
Spot of exercise
We recommend taking the 7km bike ride - or the rowboat/ canoes/ kayaks into the marais.
Day tripping
The best day trips are definitely to Bruges and Ghent - or Lille or Arras.
