About our home

Our apartment is located in Wilhelmsruh, a part of the district of Pankow, which belonged to the former East of Berlin. Wilhelmsruh is a very green and quiet area and consequently attracts a lot of families.
Our apartment building consists of eight apartments and lies at the end of a no-through road. Therefore it is even more quiet and in summer you can enjoy being on the balcony all day. The building was built in the 1920`s in a typical Berlin style - that means high ceilings, pantries in the kitchen, wash- and laundry rooms under the roof and unfortunately narrow bathrooms. Also unfortunate but interesting is that the outside and hallway of the building have not been renovated since East German times. So by entering the house you can experience a little of the life style of the 60's. The apartment itself is modern but cosy, bright rooms with wooden floor and comfortable furniture.
I initially rented the apartment just for my daughter and I, but now every other weekend we are a patchwork family of five - and we fit in. We have two bedrooms: one bedroom with a double bed and the children's room with a bunk bed. The sofa in the living room is convertible and just big enough for two people. So five to six people could be bedded, but I'd recommend it for a family up to four. The kitchen is rather small but equipped with everything a passionate cook would need and a specially heightened worktop for tall people on one side. On patchwork family days we eat in a separated area at the convertible table in the children's room but in summer we usually have all the meals on the balcony. We have four bicycles but could arrange more.

More about us

  1. We are Silke (42), Heiko (40) Hannah and Hannah (13 and 14) and Ben (10). I am an English and food technology teacher at a culinary and hospitality school and my boyfriend Heiko is a self-employed IT specialist. He lives also in our building and has his office here.
During school vacation I like to travel with my daughter alone. During summer vacation we travel together with the five of us and would prefer places reachable by car and close to swimming facilities.
We are a very sociable and friendly family and just love getting to know people around us. That's why it is most important for us to be in a place where we can be sociable. We are open for anything in Europe - surprise us.

Where is it?

Most visitors are completely surprised about how beautiful Berlin is in summer. There is lots of green, hundreds of parks and the weather is simply perfect: dry, sunny and over the last years between 24 and 30°C. So it's t-shirt time with a light jumper for the evening. During the day you can discover the city either on foot or by bike, go swimming or shopping. In the evening you can enjoy your dinner on a restaurant terrace or in a beer garden. You can even watch plays in one of the English theatres or go to a movie in English, French, Spanish or some other languages.
Our apartment is just twenty minutes from central Berlin by overground train (S-Bahn). The S-Bahn station Wilhelmsruh can be reached on foot (8 min) or by bus.
Wilhelmsruh itself is a lovely suburb of Berlin. Within walking distance you find the main street that provides you with everything needed: supermarket, bakeries, restaurants and cafés (all with open terraces in summer), a butcher's, toy shop, tea shops and two playgrounds.
Most restaurants in "central" Wilhelmsruh, like the Italian, Vietnamese, Turkish and Indian restaurant offer special lunch meals for around 5¤ and "Schönholzer Heide", a 35 ha big park, invites you to extended walks, a family picnic or a short bike tour. My immediate neighbours are all very friendly and helpful, most speak a little English, one of them fluently.
