About our home

Our home is a lovely Altbau (Victorian) apartment with high ceilings and hardwood floors. There are two bedrooms- one small, quiet room in the back with a queen sized bed overlooking the courtyard and one larger room in the front. Though the front room is not loud, you can occasionally hear cars driving across the cobblestones; however, the street isn't especially busy. The apartment also has a small bathroom and small (but charming) kitchen, a large living room and a large (and gorgeous) dining room/office. Each room is painted a different color with lots of artwork on the walls. Our place could comfortably sleep four people. The front room already has two beds for small children, but we could also arrange for a more adult-suitable sleeping area. It is located in the Berlin neighborhood of Kreuzberg 61, which is both hip but also family friendly, and is just a short walk from major transportation.

We also have a washer and wireless internet, but no television. Our daughters have two pet parakeets which we could either leave in the apartment (they are about as easy to take care of and need as much attention as a goldfish) or give to a friend if you have allergies or would prefer not to have as a responsibility.

Kreuzberg 61 is one of the most charming neighborhoods in all of Berlin. Located in the former West section of the city, the neighborhood is filled with restaurants, bars and cafes. Though still very urban and hip, Kreuzberg 61 is also laid back and very family friendly. The neighborhood is a wonderful mix of ages and ethnicities and has a definite arty edge. Our apartment is about a ten minute walk from Bergmannstrasse, which is a very popular and trendy shopping street. There are several parks nearby, three major subway lines as well as several bus stops, so getting to other places in the city is never a problem. The Kreuzberg neighborhood Graefekiez is also about a twenty minute walk along the lovely Landwehr canal. Though also child friendly, Graefekiez is a bit younger and hipper than Kreuzberg 61. I love both of these neighborhoods so much and they have so many wonderful things to offer in terms of shopping, eating and culture that I rarely ever go anywhere else!

We are a mixed nation family: My husband (43) is German and a criminal defense lawyer and I (35) am an American (originally from the San Francisco Bay Area) and am a writer and teacher. We have two sweet, red-headed daughters Mia (2 and half) and Lilly (1) who we are raising bi-lingually.

Although neither of us are from Berlin originally (my husband is from the German state of Hessen) we have both lived here for a long time- my husband for 20 years and me for ten- and love and know the city quite well. In addition to our family life and professions, my husband and I are both passionate hobby photographers.
