About our home

2020: Currently NO exchange with The Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, capitals included :-).
Also NO exchange with the Loire valley (we went there 2018).

Our 5 bedroom townhouse and its surroundings is a place you won't find easily again in central Berlin. Only 4 metro stations from Alexanderplatz, our house is situated in a lush green housing area with terrace houses, surrounded by trees and bushes, small meadows and playgrounds. There is a hidden monastery directly opposite of our house, in which 9 catholic monks live their secluded life (you can hear them play the organ sometimes). The housing complex was constructed in the 1980s by the German architect Prof. Dr. Manfred Schiethelm, who realized his vision of a family-friendly, yet urban lifestyle here.

The house is located only 3 minutes by foot from trendy Mauerpark and the hot spot "Falkplatz" in Prenzlauer Berg with many restaurants and cafés. The train station "Gesundbrunnen" with traffic connections to all Berlin is only 5 minutes by foot. Alexanderplatz is 4 U-Bahn stations away. Walking distance to the hip areas of Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte, the wall memorial and museum in Bernauer Str. and of course, the famous Sunday flea market and karaoke at Mauerpark.

Additionally to the park environment with its trees, bushes, flowers and playgrounds, we have a tiny private garden of around 6x6 meters, and an outside terrace with a dining table. Enjoy our strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and herbs. The people living in the surrounding houses have a view into the garden though, so when you sit on the terrace, you can be seen.

We renovated the house in 2016 before we moved in. Inside, we used "Farrow and Ball" colors and sought for a pure decoration with particular design objects. We have five rooms on two floors, plus kitchen, bathroom, extra toilet and corridors:

Lower floor (Kitchen, living room and WC):
- Livingroom with dining table, record station and sofa (garden and terrace can be reached from here)
- fully equipped kitchen with dining table for 6 people and a view into the lush greenery outside
- Guest toilet with washbasin

Upper floor (4 bedrooms and bathroom)
- Guest room with double bed for two adults or children (bed size 1,60 x 2,00m)
- Family bedroom with a big bed (3x2 m). Two adults and two kids kid can easily sleep in the bed, if you are open for the family bed model :-)
- Children room with a high bed and a single bed, toys and books for girls and boys (some in English)
- another children room with a high bed and working room (closed during exchanges)

- Bathroom with bath tub/shower, washbasin, washing machine and toilet
- Corridor with bookshelves

Actual photos of the living room and the childrens room will be added soon; we have a new table in the living room, and the childrens room must still be photographed after new decoration.

The house is suitable for couples, groups or families with up to 6 children. It is ideal for families with 2-4 adults and 2-4 children. It hosts up to 5 adults or families with up to 6 children, depending on how open you are to use our family bed.

Maike's reviews

More about us

  1. We are open-minded people with an eco-friendly attitude (the power and gas in our houses comes from green energies, for example). We all love music - Maike plays the piano and Andreas electronic instruments; our children play cello and the violin.

  2. Maike is 38 and a game designer and writer, Andreas is 46, owns a bar/club and is a sound designer. We have two daughters (born in February 2009 and October 2012) who go to Steiner/Waldorf school. Our children are cautious and wouldn't do any harm to your things. Anyway, we don't let our eye from the children when we are on travel. We would never ever let an eye from them when they are near of a pool or the sea.

  3. We love travelling and getting in contact with the people in other countries. We love to look under the surface and we want to really understand the social, historic and economic situation of the places where we go.

We also enjoy cooking, authentic villages, ruric restaurants, natural parks, hiking and biking.

Please note: We are currently NOT interested in an exchange with the Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands (sorry, but we receive like one inquiry per day from these countries ;-).

Where is it?

Our house and the green idyll around are located in the southern "Wedding" district, or more precisely in the "Brunnenviertel", a multi-cultural neighborhood that is just becoming popular for young people and families. It is just at the border of the famous districts Prenzlauer Berg (5 minutes walk in Eastern direction) and Mitte (5 minutes walk in Southern direction). In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the old buildings were demolished and new houses were built.

It is a residential neighborhood with lower apartment buildings - a motley, peaceful, quiet neighborhood with much greenery. Shops are close-by, in minor walking distance (5 min to Lidl, 7 min to the BIG supermarket Kaufland, 7 min to organic food store). The "Mauerpark" with its great Sunday flea market is a 3-minute walk, and through the Gleimtunnel, within 5 minutes, you reach the busy Falkplatz and Gleimstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg with its many restaurants and cafés. There is also the childrens farm "Moritzhof" only 5 minutes away, where some horses, goats, sheep, pigs, chicken and rabbits are kept. The idyllic and vast park "Humboldthain" with a great vantage point, a public open-air pool with water slide, and the old anti-aircraft bunker (on which freeclimbers try their fortune), is also only 5 minutes away. The Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Str is a 10 minute walk.

In addition, at Bhf. Gesundbrunnen, which is 5 minutes away by foot, you can make the great bunker tours of the "Berliner Unterwelten association". This is one of the most impressive experiences one can have in Berlin - our absolute tip for all visitors of Berlin, and necessarily for our guests!

In short: We offer peace and quietude just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. Right in the center, yet particularly quiet and green.

Even though it is a residential area, there are shops in the immediate vicinity: two supermarkets are just a 3 minute walk, a bakery with coffee take-away can be reached in 1 minute. There is also a lovely café with awesome cakes just around the corner, and several Turkish delis. The Gesundbrunnen Center, a big shopping mall, is within walking distance, too (7 minutes). There, you can find all kind of shops from a big organic food store to food discounters and the typical chains like H&M.

Within 10 minutes by foot, you reach the lovely streets of Prenzlauer Berg with their many small independent shops and boutiques, many cafés and the typical liberal Berlin atmosphere.
